Overview

Rifugio Baita Cassinelli — also known as Malga Cassinelli — is an Italian mountain hut (rifugio) in the upper Val Seriana, within the municipality of Castione della Presolana in the Province of Bergamo, Lombardy. It sits at an altitude of 1,568 metres above sea level on the orographic left side of the Cassinelli Valley, close to the head of the valley, at the foot of the south face of the Presolana and inside the Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche regional park. The building began life as a casera, a summer dairy shelter used by shepherds during the grazing season. In the 1960s it was renovated by the municipality of Castione della Presolana, and some of its rooms were assigned to the Clusone Alpine Rescue (Soccorso Alpino di Clusone). It was subsequently entrusted to the Clusone subsection of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), named after Carlo Medici, which first used it as a social hut (baita sociale) and later opened it to the public during the summer seasons. In December 2013 it was officially promoted to the status of rifugio. As a hospitality facility the hut offers a dining room that can seat up to 60 people and 18 beds. It functions as a base for hiking, mountaineering and ski-mountaineering in the Presolana area. From the hut, a few minutes' walk leads to the junction of trails toward the Valle dell'Ombra and the Pozzera pass, or toward the Calvario path leading to the Bivacco Presolana or the Grotta dei Pagani, from which the Via Normale to the summit begins (graded EEA). The hut lies along the eighth and final stage of the Sentiero delle Orobie, marked with CAI trail numbers 315 and 316, which reaches the Passo della Presolana in about 45 minutes. Popular routes include trail 315 to the Pozzera pass via the Valle dell'Ombra, and ski-mountaineering itineraries to nearby pizzo Corzene (2,012 m) and monte Visolo (2,369 m), as well as more demanding routes to the Presolana peaks. An easier itinerary at around 1,500 m, marked 519, heads west past numerous alpine huts including Malga Cornetto, Malga Presolana, Malga di Bàres, Malga di Campo and Malga Pozzetto.

History

Rifugio Baita Cassinelli, also known as Malga Cassinelli, is an alpine hut in the upper Val Seriana, in the municipality of Castione della Presolana (Province of Bergamo), at 1,568 metres above sea level. The building was originally used by shepherds as a casera — a summer dairy and grazing shelter — during the seasonal alpine pasture period. In the 1960s the structure was renovated by the municipality of Castione della Presolana. As part of that renovation, some of its rooms were assigned to the Clusone Alpine Rescue (Soccorso Alpino di Clusone). The hut was then given in management to the Clusone subsection of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), named after Carlo Medici. That subsection first used the building as a social hut (baita sociale) and later began opening it to the public during the summer seasons. In December 2013 the facility was officially promoted to the status of rifugio, formalising its role as a public mountain hospitality and trail-base facility. Today it operates as a mountain hut with a dining room seating up to 60 people and 18 beds, located on the orographic left side of the Cassinelli Valley near its head, at the foot of the south face of the Presolana and within the Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche. The hut is a node on the local trail network. It lies along the eighth and final stage of the Sentiero delle Orobie, marked with CAI numbers 315 and 316, which reaches the Passo della Presolana in about 45 minutes. From the hut, a short walk leads to the junction of paths toward the Valle dell'Ombra and the Pozzera pass, or toward the Calvario path leading to the Bivacco Presolana or the Grotta dei Pagani, where the Via Normale to the Presolana summit begins (graded EEA). It is also a base for ski-mountaineering routes to pizzo Corzene (2,012 m) and monte Visolo (2,369 m), and for more demanding climbs of the Presolana peaks. An easier itinerary at about 1,500 m, marked 519, runs west past several alpine huts including Malga Cornetto, Malga Presolana, Malga di Bàres, Malga di Campo and Malga Pozzetto.
