Overview

The Rietaniahütte is a historic forest hut and restaurant located on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest (Pfälzerwald) in the municipality of Rhodt unter Rietburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building dates from the 19th century and was first mentioned in 1880, when it served the local shooting club. After the club was dissolved in 1945, the Rietania association took over the building — then owned by the municipality — and converted it into a restaurant. In the late 1950s the association purchased the property outright. It was later leased to various operators; the first ran the restaurant until about 1980, after which the building was expanded and renovated before reopening under lease in 1983. Today the Rietaniahütte operates as a hospitality venue and is a waypoint on several long-distance hiking trails, including the Pfälzer Weinsteig, the Pfälzer Keschdeweg, and the Pfälzer Mandelpfad. It is owned by the Verein Rietania and remains a local landmark in the wine-growing region near the Haardt.

History

The Rietaniahütte is a building dating from the 19th century, first mentioned in 1880, when it was used by the local shooting club. That club was dissolved in 1945. Afterwards, the Rietania association took over the hut, which at the time was owned by the municipality, and converted it into a restaurant. In the late 1950s, the association purchased the building. It was later leased to various operators. The first operator ran the restaurant until about 1980, after which the building was expanded and renovated. Since 1983, it has been reopened under lease. The hut is located on the western edge of the Rhodt unter Rietburg municipality, before the Haardt, the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest. A few hundred meters east is the Rhodt vine grafting station, and about a hundred meters southeast is the boundary with Weyher in der Pfalz. The Leißelgraben flows underground beneath the hut. The Rietaniahütte is a waypoint on the Pfälzer Weinsteig, Pfälzer Keschdeweg, and Pfälzer Mandelpfad hiking trails.
