Overview
Rhodius Mineralquellen und Getränke GmbH & Co. KG is a German mineral water bottler and beverage producer headquartered in Burgbrohl in the Vordereifel region of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is part of the Gebrüder Rhodius family business group, whose history dates back to 1827, when the four Rhodius brothers founded a white lead pigment factory in Burgbrohl. The mineral water company itself was established in 1958, when the family acquired the exclusive license rights to produce and distribute Pepsi-Cola. Today Rhodius is one of the largest medium-sized companies in the Vordereifel, employing more than 350 people and filling around 600 million units per year. The company produces its own mineral water brands, including Rhodius Mineralwasser and Vulkanpark Quelle Eifel, as well as non-alcoholic soft drinks such as Iso-Sport and Maya Mate. Since 2015 it has been a licensee for the brands afri-cola and Bluna, and in 2025 it became a licensing partner for the iced tea brand Trade Islands from Eder & Heylands. In addition to its own brands, Rhodius operates contract bottling for other companies, including beverage cans; the first canning line was installed in 1977 and another in 2016. Rhodius mineral water comes from a 500-meter-deep artesian spring protected from contamination. The company is led by siblings Frauke Helf and Hannes Tack, managing partners of the eighth generation. The group emphasizes tradition, innovation, digitalization and family values, and describes itself as a modern company competing internationally in its industry.
History
The history of the Rhodius family business begins in 1827, when the brothers Christian, Engelbert, Carl Christian and Friedrich Eduard Rhodius founded a white lead factory (Bleiweißfabrik) in Burgbrohl. In 1829 the four brothers purchased the carbonated Fellbuhr mineral spring and initially used it to produce white lead, a pigment for high-opacity paint. Over the following decades the product range expanded continuously. From 1883 carbonic acid was liquefied, bottled and sold as a standalone product. With the acquisition of further springs in 1933, the distribution of carbonic acid grew, and in 1937 the company began producing paints and varnishes. In 1950 white lead production was discontinued, and Rhodius instead entered the manufacture of abrasive tools; two years later Rhodius Schleifwerkzeuge GmbH & Co. KG was founded. As part of horizontal diversification in the post-World War II years, Rhodius Mineralquellen und Getränke GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1958. In the same year the company acquired the exclusive license rights to produce and distribute Pepsi-Cola. In 1974 production of [mineral water] began, and in 1977 the first canning line was installed. In 2015 Rhodius became a licensee for the brands afri-cola and Bluna. In 2016 a further canning line was installed. In 2025 Rhodius also became a licensee partner for the iced tea brand Trade Islands from Eder & Heylands. Today the company is led by siblings Frauke Helf and Hannes Tack, managing partners of the eighth generation. With over 350 employees, Rhodius is one of the largest medium-sized companies in the Vordereifel. The company fills around 600 million units per year and its portfolio includes eight brands. Rhodius mineral water comes from a 500-meter-deep artesian spring protected from contamination; the water is described as juvenile water from the Earth's interior that has never been part of the normal water cycle.
