History
The company was founded on April 1, 1880, when the first insurance contract was signed in Neuss. It was originally established as the Feuerversicherungsgesellschaft Rheinland Aktiengesellschaft. The business commenced with 108 agencies in the Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf and 49 in the Regierungsbezirk Aachen. The first board consisted of Franz Werhahn (1850-1925) and Joseph Broix (1837-1910). In 1903, the company purchased its first typewriter, a Remington. In 1922, together with two banking institutions, the Münchener Lebensversicherungsbank AG was founded, and the Rheinland developed into a group. In 1925, the company entered the motor vehicle accident and liability insurance business. During World War II, the administrative building was heavily damaged in an air raid on Neuss in 1942 and largely destroyed by the end of the war.
