Overview

REXT Holdings Co., Ltd. is a Japanese holding company that oversees a portfolio of entertainment and lifestyle retail businesses. Its origins trace back to 1981, when the electronics division of the supermarket chain Kasumi began operations in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture. In 1988 this division was spun off as Kasumi Denki Co., Ltd. The company entered entertainment retail in 1992 with the opening of FOXY, a rental video, music and bookstore in Mitsukaido (now Joso City). Over the following decades it expanded through formats such as WonderGOO, WonderREX, WonderSTATION and DIGIX WONDER, and in 2000 changed its name to Wonder Corporation. After facing competition from electronics retailers, it transferred its home appliance business to K's Holdings in 2003 and focused on entertainment retail. It acquired Shinseido in 2013 and merged with it in 2016. In 2018, RIZAP Group acquired a 75.05% voting stake, making it a subsidiary. In April 2021, Wonder Corporation, Jeans Mate and HAPiNS integrated under a joint holding company, REXT (first generation). In June 2022, a further reorganization created REXT Holdings Co., Ltd. (asset management company) and REXT Co., Ltd. (business operating company). REXT Holdings is now a wholly owned subsidiary of RIZAP Group. Its retail brands include WonderGOO (entertainment specialty stores), WonderREX (reuse and second-hand goods), Shinseido (CD/DVD/record shops), Jeans Mate (jeans and casual wear), HAPiNS (variety goods), and CoLeColle (cosmetics). The company operates primarily in Japan, with a concentration of stores in the Kanto region and a growing presence in other areas. It is pursuing a strategy of developing high-value private brands, strengthening e-commerce, creating new store formats, and promoting digital transformation, aiming to realize 'RETAIL NEXT' — a new form of retail.

History

The history of REXT Holdings begins in 1981, when the supermarket chain Kasumi started an electronics division in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture. In March 1988, this division was incorporated as Kasumi Denki Co., Ltd. In April 1992, the company opened its first entertainment store, FOXY, in Mitsukaido (now Joso City), selling rental videos, music software, and books. In June of the same year, it opened a computer specialty store, C-YOU, in Arakawaoki, Tsuchiura. In October 1993, it opened a combined store, Kasumi Denki & C-YOU, in Ushiku, focusing on home appliances, computers, game software, and music software. In January 1995, it opened 'mega', an entertainment specialty store for game software, music software, and books, in Tsukuba. From 1996, the company began consolidating its store names: in September 1996, 'mega' was renamed 'WonderGOO', and in November 1996, 'Kasumi Denki & C-YOU' became 'Wonder STATION'. In June 1999, it opened 'DIGIX WONDER', a new computer specialty store, in Tokai Village. In January 2000, the company changed its name to Wonder Corporation in preparation for a JASDAQ listing. However, unable to compete with electronics retailers, in 2002 it formed a capital alliance with K's Holdings, also based in Ibaraki, and transferred Wonder STATION and DIGIX WONDER to K's (the capital alliance was dissolved in August 2015). It also acquired Bookland Kasumi, the bookstore division of the Kasumi Group, and merged it in March 2006. In April 2000, it joined the franchise chain of Hard Off Corporation, operating 'Hard Off' and 'Off House' reuse shops. In October 2004, it listed its shares on the Japan Securities Dealers Association (now JASDAQ). In December 2004, it opened its first internet cafe, WonderCAFE. In December 2005, it launched an online shopping business. In July 2009, it entered the eyeglass retail business through a franchise agreement with ONDO. In October 2009, it terminated its franchise agreement with Hard Off and launched its own reuse brand, WonderREX. In June 2012, it made Sun Leisure a subsidiary, and in February 2013, it made Shinseido a subsidiary. In March 2013, it established New Wave Distribution. In June 2014, Sun Leisure and K Corporation merged to form Vidaway. In November 2014, it formed a comprehensive partnership with FamilyMart and opened the first 'FamilyMart TSUTAYA Nakaminato' store. In February 2016, Wonder Corporation absorbed Shinseido. In July 2016, it introduced T-Point services. In July 2017, it opened its first fitness gym, TetraFit. In February 2018, it formed a capital and business alliance with RIZAP Group, and in March 2018, it became a consolidated subsidiary of RIZAP Group. In April 2019, it opened its first shopping-mall-style reuse store, WonderREX Ion. In December 2020, it announced a management integration with HAPiNS and Jeans Mate, effective April 1, 2021. Wonder Corporation was delisted from JASDAQ on March 30, 2021, and became a wholly owned subsidiary of REXT (first generation) on April 1, 2021. In May 2022, REXT (first generation) absorbed Wonder Corporation. On June 1, 2022, Jeans Mate and HAPiNS were split off, and the company was renamed REXT Holdings Co., Ltd. (asset management company) and REXT Co., Ltd. (business operating company).
