Overview
Revista Filipina is a semiannual electronic journal devoted to the study and dissemination of Hispanic-Filipino language, culture, and literature — that is, the literature of the Philippines written in Spanish. Founded in 1997 by the poet, playwright, and educator Edmundo Farolán Romero, it has been published continuously since its inception and is recognized as a key organ of contemporary Filipinismo and Hispanismo. The journal is published by Carayan Press and distributed online, with an ISSN (1496-4538) and a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. The publication presents two notable singularities. First, it occupies a space gradually abandoned during the first half of the 20th century by traditional Spanish-language Philippine cultural publications in print, which have since disappeared in a country that is geographically and linguistically fragmented and subject to strong diglossia. Second, it has offered, in the new unlimited space of the internet, an unexpected intellectual communication medium that reaches a Hispanic Filipinismo dispersed throughout the world as well as across the extreme multiplicity of the archipelago itself. In its pages, Revista Filipina has reissued texts from the Filipino heritage, both ancient (such as the famous Boxer Codex) and modern (José Rizal, Fernando María Guerrero, Pedro Paterno, Wenceslao Retana, Jesús Balmori, Claro Mayo Recto, Antonio M. Abad), while also disseminating the leading contemporary Filipino critics and authors in Spanish (Guillermo Gómez Rivera, Edwin Lozada, Elizabeth Medina, Macario Ofilada, among others). It has been considered a natural organ for the reactivation of Filipino literary production in Spanish, its appreciation and study, and more generally for the Filipinismo of our time. The journal's history comprises two stages. During the first (1997–2012), it published 59 issues on a quarterly basis, up to volume XVI, number 3, Winter 2012–13. In Summer 2013 it began its second stage, with new numbering, now semiannual and with greater academic dedication. It is currently directed by Edwin Lozada. It publishes research, thought, and literary current affairs in the form of essays, articles, and notes, as well as reviews and bibliographic commentaries, and is subject to peer review. The editorial team includes Director Edwin Lozada, Deputy Director Isaac Donoso, and Secretary Andrea Gallo, supported by a scientific committee featuring scholars from institutions such as the University of Alicante, the University of Valladolid, the Complutense University of Madrid, the University of Vigo, and the Ateneo de Manila University, alongside members of the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española. Revista Filipina remains an active, open-access publication, with recent volumes such as 2025, volume 12, numbers 1–2, dedicated to the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española.
History
Revista Filipina was founded in 1997 by Edmundo Farolán Romero, a Filipino poet, playwright, painter, and Spanish-language educator. Farolán, who had lived in Madrid and been associated with the Colegio Mayor Guadalupe and the Faculty of Letters of the Universidad Central, had collaborated in the Spanish-language literary pages of Manila newspapers such as Nueva Era and Nuevo Horizonte. He created Revista Filipina as an electronic journal to defend the relevance and presence of Spanish in the Philippines and to provide a dedicated outlet for Hispanic-Filipino literature. The journal's first stage ran from 1997 to 2012, during which it published 59 issues on a quarterly basis, reaching volume XVI, number 3, in Winter 2012–13. This period established the publication as a continuous and specialized voice in a field where traditional Spanish-language print cultural publications had largely disappeared during the first half of the 20th century. In Summer 2013, Revista Filipina began its second stage (Segunda Etapa), with new numbering, a shift to semiannual periodicity, and a stronger academic orientation. The journal adopted peer review and expanded its editorial and scientific committees. From 2017, it has been directed by Edwin Lozada, with Isaac Donoso as deputy director and Andrea Gallo as secretary. Its scientific committee has included scholars such as Pedro Aullón de Haro (University of Alicante), Joaquín García Medall (University of Valladolid), Guillermo Gómez Rivera (Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española), Florentino Rodao (Complutense University), Joaquín Sueiro Justel (University of Vigo), and Fernando Ziálcita (Ateneo de Manila University). Throughout its history, Revista Filipina has reissued texts from the Filipino heritage, both ancient (such as the Boxer Codex) and modern (José Rizal, Fernando María Guerrero, Pedro Paterno, Wenceslao Retana, Jesús Balmori, Claro Mayo Recto, Antonio M. Abad), and has disseminated contemporary Filipino authors and critics writing in Spanish (Guillermo Gómez Rivera, Edwin Lozada, Elizabeth Medina, Macario Ofilada, among others). It has been considered a natural organ for the reactivation of Filipino literary production in Spanish and for the study and appreciation of Filipinismo. The journal is published by Carayan Press and distributed online under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. It maintains an ISSN (1496-4538) and continues to publish research, essays, notes, and reviews. Recent volumes, such as 2025, volume 12, numbers 1–2, have been dedicated to the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española, reflecting the journal's close ties to the institutional and academic life of Spanish in the Philippines.
