Overview

RETROTIMBER GmbH is an Austrian wood-products company founded in 2013 in Zirl, Tyrol, by Alfred Hanger. It manufactures what it markets as "the alternative to reclaimed wood": solid timber and glued wood products made from freshly harvested, sustainably managed Central European forests — notably larch from local mountain regions — that are processed to reproduce the appearance and tactile character of aged wood. The company positions its products for constructive timber engineering, facades and interior wall cladding, and supplies them across Austria and Germany from several production sites, with sales activities extending to Switzerland, Italy and France. The core commercial argument is technical rather than purely aesthetic. Unlike conventional reclaimed timber, RETROTIMBER products are statically calculable, load-bearing and free of contaminants, because they are made from fresh wood rather than salvaged material that may have absorbed pollutants. The company holds European Technical Assessments (ETAs) for its solid-wood products (ETA-16/0706) and for glued products such as glulam (ETA-17/0393), which serve as proof of technical suitability under the EU Construction Products Regulation. Products can be supplied pre-cut and finished, and are available at short notice. RETROTIMBER is a privately held company. Its founder, Alfred Hanger, remains managing director. The management team includes Christian Waldner as sales manager for Austria, Switzerland, Italy and France, Bernhard Zangerl in logistics and scheduling, Petra Spiegl in back office and accounting, Thomas Spiegl in inside sales, and Alexander Nedl in quality, technology and engineering. The company celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2023, became a Holzring partner in 2024, and launched its online ordering portal in 2025.

History

RETROTIMBER was founded in 2013 in Zirl, Tyrol, Austria, by Alfred Hanger. The company set out to create a product that did not previously exist: a wood material that reproduces the visual and tactile qualities of reclaimed timber while avoiding its technical drawbacks. In 2014, the young company received the Innovation Prize at the Klagenfurt wood fair (Holzmesse) in Carinthia, an early recognition of its approach. Over the following decade, RETROTIMBER developed a product range based on fresh wood from sustainably managed Central European forests, with larch from local mountain regions as a signature raw material. The products are manufactured at several sites in Austria and Germany. A central technical achievement was the granting of European Technical Assessments (ETAs): ETA-16/0706 for solid-wood products and ETA-17/0393 for glued products such as glulam (BSH). These assessments certify the technical suitability of the products under the EU Construction Products Regulation and underpin the company's claim that its material is statically calculable and load-bearing — a key differentiator from conventional reclaimed wood, which cannot be reliably engineered. In 2023 the company celebrated its tenth anniversary. In 2024 it became a Holzring partner, strengthening its position in the German-speaking timber trade. In 2025 it launched its online ordering portal, digitizing access to its product range. Throughout, founder Alfred Hanger has remained managing director, supported by a management team covering sales, logistics, finance, inside sales and engineering. Sales activities are led for Austria, Switzerland, Italy and France, while production and distribution span Austria and Germany.
