Overview

Retraites Populaires is a Swiss life insurance and occupational pension company headquartered in Lausanne. Founded in 1907 as a public-law institution at the initiative of the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud, it was created to help the population save for old age, following concerns raised by physician and cantonal deputy Émile Dind about the poor economic conditions faced by many elderly people. The company is described on its website as the Vaud specialist in life insurance and occupational pensions. Retraites Populaires serves private clients, businesses, and public authorities. For private clients, it offers third-pillar savings and protection, retirement planning, free passage policies for transferring second-pillar assets, mortgage loans, and life insurance policy loans. For professional clients, it provides occupational pension solutions for companies, executives, self-employed individuals, administrators, and professional associations, including the second-pillar pension scheme for Vaud physicians. For public authorities, it offers pension services and loans. The company has a long history of managing pension mandates. In 1924, it was entrusted with the management of the Caisse intercommunale de pensions (CIP). In 1952, the Caisse de pensions de l'État de Vaud (CPEV) was added to its list of mandates. In 1998, together with Rentes Genevoises and later the Caisse cantonale d'assurance populaire (CCAP) of Neuchâtel, it founded Forces Vives, a private life insurance company able to operate outside Swiss territory. In 2009, Retraites Populaires created Profelia, a pension foundation active throughout French-speaking Switzerland for second-pillar pensions of public and parapublic sector staff. It also operates Complea, a pension foundation. By 2018, Retraites Populaires counted more than 130,000 insured persons. The company remains active and continues to provide life insurance, pension, and mortgage services, with a focus on the Swiss Romandy region and the Canton of Vaud.

History

Retraites Populaires was founded in 1907 as a public-law institution in Lausanne, at the initiative of the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud. Its purpose was to help the population save money throughout life in preparation for old age. The initiative stemmed from the observations of physician and cantonal deputy Émile Dind, who had noted the deplorable economic conditions in which many elderly people faced their daily lives. In 1924, the company was entrusted with the management of the Caisse intercommunale de pensions (CIP). In 1952, the Caisse de pensions de l'État de Vaud (CPEV) was added to the list of mandates managed by Retraites Populaires. In 1998, together with Rentes Genevoises (and from 2000 also with the Caisse cantonale d'assurance populaire (CCAP) of Neuchâtel), it founded Forces Vives, a private life insurance company able to operate outside Swiss territory. In 2009, Retraites Populaires created Profelia, a pension foundation active throughout French-speaking Switzerland for the second pillar of public and parapublic sector staff. By 2018, it counted more than 130,000 insured persons. The company continues to operate as a life insurance and occupational pension provider, offering a range of products for private clients, businesses, and public authorities, with a strong presence in the Canton of Vaud and the Romandy region.
