History

Retecapri was established by Television Broadcasting System at the end of 1982 as a second television network connected with the Capri broadcasting operation. The channel was created shortly after Telecapri entered the Italia 1 network. TBS's plan was to separate the roles of the two services: Telecapri would carry the national network schedule, while Retecapri would originate programming and preserve the independent production tradition associated with Capri. The early Retecapri schedule combined imported entertainment with locally recognizable programming. Before 1985, the channel showed American television series including Peyton Place, The Strange Couple, The Addams Family, Get Smart and Laverne & Shirley. It also broadcast the Cinque Punto Zero block, led by Uffi and Teresa Iaccarino and known for incorporating anime. In May 1983, Retecapri agreed to receive programming from TV PORT for 18 months, supplementing its own schedule during its development phase. A major change occurred in the mid-1980s. Telecapri left Italia 1 and joined Euro TV, a network that allowed affiliates more room to shape their own schedules. TBS concentrated most of its programming acquisitions and operational resources on the flagship service, leaving Retecapri with fewer programs. The channel then sought a more distinctive format. Between the end of 1985 and September 1987, it used the combined Retecapri–Music & Cinema identity and focused primarily on music videos and films. This period expanded the station's reach from its established center-southern Italian audience. Retecapri became available in Turin through an affiliation with Quartarete and later reached Milan through Italab TV; the relevant frequencies were formally transferred to Retecapri in the early 1990s. In September 1987, Retecapri returned to general programming and continued in that form until 1998. The schedule included feature films, television films, telenovelas, anime, documentaries and teleshopping. From 1991, Teresa Iaccarino presented a newscast, with national services prepared by TBS's Rome offices and international services supplied in cooperation with CNN. The station therefore combined entertainment and commercial programming with an information component rather than operating solely as a music or film channel. The Italian regulatory environment became central to Retecapri's later development. In 1992, after the Mammì law reshaped private television broadcasting, Retecapri applied for one of nine national concessions. It did not obtain a concession, as the successful applicants included the main Mediaset networks, Videomusic, Rete A, Telemontecarlo and the three Telepiù channels. During the digital switchover, Retecapri received virtual channel number 20. The channel objected to the decision and argued that positions 8 or 9 were more appropriate, challenging the eligibility of MTV and Deejay TV for those places under the criteria for analogue national generalist channels. Retecapri's later offer included news and information programs such as TG, Piazza Montecitorio, Pianeta Salute and New Magazine, together with the series The F.B.I. and Finder of Lost Loves. Its themed schedule also included the science-fiction strand Film da un altro mondo, the evening film block Un sogno in Bianco e Nero at 9 p.m. and a further film at 10:30 p.m. In April 2017, TBS sold the channel to Mediaset. On 5 May, it began broadcasting on the Mediaset 2 multiplex under Mediaset ownership, opening with the soap opera Milagros. The post-sale schedule was based largely on Mediaset's library and soap-operas. TBS subsequently shifted its programming to Capri Television. The available sources do not provide enough information to determine whether Retecapri continues as an independent channel in the present day.

Products and positioning

A Capri-originated Italian general-interest television channel combining locally developed programming with acquired entertainment, films, music, information and teleshopping. Its identity shifted over time from an independent companion to Telecapri, to a music-and-film service, and later to a semi-generalist channel carried within national terrestrial television arrangements.
