Overview

Rete8, also known as Rete 8, is a regional Italian television channel based in Chieti, Abruzzo. Founded in 1988, it is an Abruzzo-focused broadcaster that has historically produced all of its own programming in-house. Its main headquarters are located at viale Abruzzo 374 in Chieti, near the Stadio Guido Angelini, and it maintains branch offices in Lanciano, L'Aquila, Teramo and Vasto. The channel covers the entire Abruzzo region on LCN 10 and has also broadcast into Molise and parts of the Adriatic coast of Marche and Puglia. Rete8's programming is centered on local news and information, with its main newscast Tg8 collaborating with national broadcasters such as Sky Italia, 7 Gold, LA7, Mediaset and Rai when Abruzzo events are of national interest. Over the years it has aired a range of self-produced programs, including the information program Servizio pubblico in the 2011–2012 season and, the following year, major matches from the final rounds of the Spanish Liga. In the past it was part of the Cinquestelle circuit. Since the transition to digital terrestrial television in 2012, Rete8 has been visible on its own multiplex, which also carries related channels: Rete8 Sport (launched January 2012) and Rete8 News (in 16:9), Rete8 Live, Rete8 Salute and Rete8 Meraviglie (all launched in May of the same year). The same editorial group also controls the Abruzzo broadcaster Telemare, founded in Pescara in 1978 and available on digital terrestrial LCN 273. Following the refarming of local TV frequencies in April 2022, Rete8 broadcasts in Abruzzo and again in Molise on LCN 10. The channel's website, rete8.it, serves as its online news portal, featuring sections such as Cronaca, Sport and In Evidenza.

History

Rete8 was founded in 1988 as a local Abruzzo television channel. From its early years it distinguished itself by airing only self-produced programs, a characteristic that set it apart from many local broadcasters that relied on syndicated or imported content. At one point it was part of the Cinquestelle circuit. The channel established its main headquarters in Chieti at viale Abruzzo 374, near the Stadio Guido Angelini, and opened branch offices in Lanciano, L'Aquila, Teramo and Vasto. For many years the journalist Pasquale Pacilio served as its editor-in-chief (direttore responsabile). Rete8's coverage extended across the whole of Abruzzo on LCN 10, and for a period it also broadcast its signal into Molise with its own multiplex and LCN 73, as well as parts of the Adriatic coast of Marche and Puglia. Its Tg8 newscast has collaborated with Sky Italia, 7 Gold, LA7, Mediaset and Rai when events in Abruzzo were of national interest. In the 2011–2012 television season Rete8 aired the information program Servizio pubblico, and the following year it broadcast the most important matches of the final rounds of the Spanish Liga. The transition to digital terrestrial television in 2012 marked a major expansion: Rete8 became visible on its own multiplex, which also carried related channels. Rete8 Sport launched in January 2012, followed in May of the same year by Rete8 News (in 16:9), Rete8 Live, Rete8 Salute and Rete8 Meraviglie. The same editorial group also controls the Abruzzo broadcaster Telemare, founded in Pescara in 1978 and broadcast on digital terrestrial LCN 273. With the refarming of local TV frequencies in April 2022, Rete8 continued broadcasting in Abruzzo and returned to Molise on LCN 10. The channel maintains an online presence through its website rete8.it, which operates as a news portal with sections including Cronaca, Sport and In Evidenza.
