Overview
Repulse Records was a Spanish independent record label founded in 1991 by Dave Rotten, vocalist of the Spanish death metal band Avulsed. The label was dedicated primarily to death metal and related extreme metal genres, and it became a notable name in the underground scene during the 1990s. Its catalogue included releases by bands such as Avulsed, Deeds of Flesh, Demilich, Immolation, Incantation, Vader, Rotten Sound, and Deranged, among others. Repulse Records operated from Spain and expanded internationally through subsidiaries: Repulse America in San Luis Obispo, United States; Repulse South America in Santiago, Chile; and Repulse Japan in Osaka, Japan. Repulse America was founded by Jacoby Kingston and Erik Lindmark of the band Deeds of Flesh, who later founded Unique Leader Records. Despite its cult status, the label was not sufficiently profitable and went bankrupt in August 2002. That same year, Dave Rotten founded Xtreem Music, which continued to release extreme metal. Repulse Records remains remembered as a key outlet for 1990s death metal, particularly for European and American bands.
History
Repulse Records was founded in 1991 by Dave Rotten, the vocalist of the Spanish death metal band Avulsed. Rotten had already been running Drowned Productions and wanted to establish an independent label. In an interview, he explained the name: "[...] it's a name I had in mind for years, when I was looking for a name for my band Avulsed, and many of them included the word REPULSE. It's easy to understand in English and Spanish and it's something 'repulsive', like the music we produce, ha, ha!!" During its existence, Repulse Records had three subsidiaries outside Spain: Repulse America in San Luis Obispo, United States; Repulse South America in Santiago, Chile; and Repulse Japan in Osaka, Japan. Repulse America was founded by Jacoby Kingston and Erik Lindmark (of the band Deeds of Flesh, at that time signed to Repulse Records). Kingston and Lindmark would also found Unique Leader Records. As Repulse Records was not profitable enough, the label went bankrupt in August 2002. Dave Rotten founded the label Xtreem Music the same year. Before its dissolution, the label had signed notable bands such as Avulsed and Deteroriot. Notable productions include releases by Adramelech, Anasarca, Avulsed, Deeds of Flesh, Demilich, Deranged, Disgorge, Immolation, Incantation, Rotten Sound, and Vader.
