Overview
Rekers Betonwerk GmbH & Co. KG is a medium-sized, family-owned German company in the concrete and precast concrete industry, headquartered in Spelle in the Emsland region of Lower Saxony. The business traces its origins to 1919, when Gerhard Rekers founded a construction company after returning from the First World War. A building materials trading business followed in 1921, and by around 1928 the company had begun producing concrete goods — mainly pipes and gratings — partly to keep employees occupied during the winter months. Over the following decades the firm expanded its precast concrete activities, survived the disruption of the Second World War, and grew substantially in the post-war period under the leadership of the Rekers family. Today Rekers operates four production sites and serves customers across Germany and into neighboring countries. Its business fields cover precast concrete elements, prefabricated concrete garages, angle retaining walls, and concrete goods for road, garden and landscape construction. The company also produces ready-mixed concrete. Its precast elements have been used in prominent projects including the Arena auf Schalke (Veltins-Arena) and the Ostseestadion in Rostock, both built in 2000. Since 2005 Rekers has also manufactured tubbing segments for tunnel construction. Rekers positions itself as a technically competent, reliable partner offering system-based concrete solutions from design through manufacturing to on-time delivery. The company emphasizes quality, precision and dependable processes across its business areas. As a family-run enterprise with decades of experience in precast construction, it combines a strong production and logistics infrastructure with engineering expertise. Its product range spans classic applications as well as forward-looking areas such as wind energy and infrastructure. The company remains privately held and is not listed on any stock exchange.
History
Rekers Betonwerk traces its origins to 1919, when Gerhard Rekers founded a construction company after returning from the First World War. At that time the firm employed around 15 people. In 1921 a building materials trading business was added, selling general construction materials and especially timber. Around 1928 Gerhard Rekers began manufacturing concrete goods, mainly concrete pipes and gratings, in part to keep employees occupied during the winter when bad weather halted construction work. The Second World War interrupted the company's development, leaving only five employees. After the war, son Anton Rekers joined the firm and concrete goods production was expanded. In the summer of 1960 Anton Rekers died and his brother Hubert Rekers took over management. The company continued to develop positively, and in 1969 a new production site was planned and built on Portlandstraße in Spelle. By the 1970s the company employed around 500 people. In the 1980s and 1990s demand for concrete products rose sharply. The company acquired a concrete plant in Gelsenkirchen and built a new production site near Magdeburg in the new federal states of former East Germany. In 2000, precast concrete elements from Rekers were used for the first time in a football stadium, the Arena auf Schalke (now Veltins-Arena). In the same year, production of prefabricated concrete garages began in Groß Ammensleben, and the Ostseestadion of Hansa Rostock was also built using concrete elements from Rekers Betonwerk. After the preservation of the threatened section of the Rheine–Spelle railway line by RVM-Eisenbahn over the Tecklenburger Nordbahn was secured, the company invested in upgrading and expanding its rail connection. Since 2004, prefabricated concrete garages and angle retaining walls have also been produced in Ochenbruck near Nuremberg. In 2005 Rekers Betonwerk entered the production of tubbing segments for tunnel construction. Today Rekers Betonwerk GmbH & Co.
