Overview

REINTJES GmbH is a German manufacturer of marine gearboxes and propulsion technology based in Hameln, Lower Saxony. The company traces its origins to 1879, when Theodor Reintjes founded a small mechanical workshop in Emmerich am Rhein. His son Eugen Reintjes took over the business in 1912 and developed it further; the first gearbox was delivered in 1929. After relocations to Wagenfeld in the 1940s and to Hameln in 1955, production of marine gearboxes began at the current Hameln site in 1971. Since 1962 the company has belonged to the non-profit Eugen-Reintjes-Stiftung, founded by Eugen Reintjes to promote health and social services in the city of Hameln. REINTJES specialises in custom-designed gearboxes for all types of ships, with a power range from 250 to 30,000 kW. Its core applications include yachts, ferries, workboats, fast vessels, and government and naval ships. The company also offers hybrid systems such as the TME Hybrid System, designed for ferries, yachts, supply and workboats, and naval and authority vessels operating in coastal areas or harbours. Since 2011 it has additionally manufactured gearboxes for steam turbines, gas turbines, and compressors. With more than 500 employees worldwide, eleven subsidiaries, and numerous sales and service partners, REINTJES operates as a global player. Its export rate, including indirect exports, was around 90% in 2012. In 2015 the company produced approximately 865 transmissions at its Hameln headquarters, and a total of 90,000 units have been delivered. International subsidiaries and representatives include Reintjes Asia Pacific Pte Ltd in Singapore (founded 1993), Reintjes España S.A. in Madrid (1994), Reintjes Middle East L.L.C. in Dubai (1995), Reintjes Benelux BVBA in Antwerp (2004, following the acquisition of AMW Antwerpse Motorenwerke NV), Reintjes Comercio e Servicos do Brasil LTDA in Rio de Janeiro (2011), and Reintjes France SARL (2014). Karl Senner has been the exclusive sales and service representative for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean since 1972. The company positions itself as a problem solver and concept developer for shipowners, yacht owners, ferry companies, and states worldwide. It emphasises quality, social engagement, and close customer proximity, and operates a REINTJES Academy for training. Its product range covers marine gearboxes, hybrid propulsion systems, and industrial gearboxes for turbines and compressors.

History

The history of REINTJES begins in 1879, when Theodor Reintjes founded a small mechanical workshop in Emmerich am Rhein. In 1912, after completing an engineering examination at the Technical University in Hagen, his son Eugen Reintjes took over the business and developed it step by step. The first gearbox was delivered in 1929. During the 1940s, Eugen Reintjes moved the company from Emmerich to Wagenfeld in Lower Saxony. In 1955, another relocation followed, to Werftstraße in Hameln. In 1962, Eugen Reintjes established the non-profit Eugen-Reintjes-Stiftung to promote health and social services in the city of Hameln; since then, REINTJES GmbH has been owned by the foundation. In 1971, production moved to the current site in Hameln, where marine gearboxes have been manufactured ever since. Over the following decades, the company grew steadily and developed into a global player with subsidiaries and service partners worldwide. In 1972, Karl Senner became the exclusive sales and service representative for Reintjes gearboxes in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. In 1993, Reintjes Asia Pacific Pte Ltd was founded in Singapore, followed in 1994 by Reintjes España, S.A. in Madrid. In 1995, Reintjes Middle East L.L.C. was established in Dubai. In 2004, Reintjes GmbH acquired its then highest-revenue European customer, AMW Antwerpse Motorenwerke NV in Antwerp, and continued the business as Reintjes Benelux BVBA. Later, Reintjes Asia Pacific Pte Ltd opened a representative office in Shanghai and took over Trans-Matic Pte Ltd in Singapore. In 2007, a new turning, drilling and grinding centre and a vertical machining centre were built. In 2009, the office building was expanded with a new test and service hall. Internationally, the company developed a global sales and service network with its own subsidiaries and representatives. Reintjes Comercio e Servicos do Brasil LTDA was founded on 20 April 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, and Reintjes France SARL was established on 9 January 2014. In October 2019, Stone Marine Services was appointed sales and service agent for Namibia and Angola. In 2014, the company opened its on-site company kindergarten, "Kleiner Eugen", on the REINTJES premises in Hameln. The company has continued to expand its product range: since 2011, it has also manufactured and sold gearboxes for steam turbines, gas turbines, and compressors. In 2015, it produced approximately 865 transmissions at its Hameln headquarters, and a total of 90,000 units have been delivered. The export rate of its products in 2012, including indirect exports, was around 90%. Today, REINTJES employs over 500 people worldwide and operates eleven subsidiaries and numerous sales and service partners.
