Overview

The Regroupement des chercheurs-chercheuses en histoire des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (RCHTQ) was a Québec-based scholarly association founded in 1972 by researchers who wanted to contribute to the development of labour history. For more than four decades it served as a meeting point for historians, students and others interested in the history of workers and working-class life in Québec. Its main vehicle of communication was the Bulletin du RCHTQ, a periodical that ran for 104 issues and remains a key source for the field. The association also published other works, including subject indexes and collective volumes. In May 2017 the RCHTQ decided to end its activities, leaving behind four decades of research on Québec labour history. To preserve and make accessible this legacy, the Centre d'histoire des régulations sociales (CHRS) at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) put the 104 issues of the Bulletin and their articles online, along with a list of other RCHTQ publications and a subject index for articles published between 1974 and 2004. The CHRS also conducted an interview with Jacques Rouillard, professor emeritus at the Université de Montréal and one of the main figures of the RCHTQ, and Rouillard published an article on the history of the group and its Bulletin. The RCHTQ was not a commercial company but a non-profit scholarly network. Its legacy is primarily documentary and historiographical: the Bulletin and other publications continue to be used by researchers, and its archives are hosted by the CHRS. The association's history reflects the broader development of social and labour history in Québec from the 1970s onward.

History

The Regroupement des chercheurs-chercheuses en histoire des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (RCHTQ) was founded in 1972 by researchers who wished to take part in the development of labour history. At the time, social and labour history was expanding in Québec universities, and the RCHTQ provided a network for historians, graduate students and others working on the history of workers and working-class movements. Its principal publication, the Bulletin du RCHTQ, became a regular outlet for research notes, debates, bibliographies and source inventories. Over the decades the Bulletin reached 104 issues, and the association also produced other publications, including a subject index covering articles published between 1974 and 2004. In May 2017 the RCHTQ decided to bring its activities to an end. The decision closed more than four decades of research on Québec labour history. To make this contribution available to a wider public, the Centre d'histoire des régulations sociales (CHRS) at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) placed the 104 issues of the Bulletin and their articles online, along with a list of other RCHTQ publications and the subject index. The CHRS also recorded an interview with Jacques Rouillard, professor emeritus in the history department of the Université de Montréal and one of the main actors of the RCHTQ; Rouillard published an article on the history of the RCHTQ and its Bulletin in 2016. The RCHTQ's documentary legacy is now accessible through the CHRS website, where researchers can search the Bulletin articles and consult the list of issues and other publications.
