Overview
Regionale Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen RVSH AG, which traded under the brand name SchaffhausenBus, was a Swiss public transport company operating bus services in the Canton of Schaffhausen. It was founded in 2001 as an Aktiengesellschaft wholly owned by the Canton of Schaffhausen, succeeding the Autoverbindung Schaffhausen–Schleitheim (ASS). Its roots reach back to the Strassenbahn Schaffhausen–Schleitheim (St.S.S.), a tramway opened in 1905. At its height, RVSH served 22 municipalities in the canton. The company's network consisted of five main regional bus lines (21 to 25) plus additional lines 27 and 28, and seven night bus lines (N21–N25 and N77) on weekends. Operations on lines 22–25 were subcontracted to Rattin AG of Neuhausen am Rheinfall, while line 28 was run by Weder Transport of Schaffhausen. The company was managed by Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen (VBSH), which acted as the executive entity. At the end of 2013, RVSH employed 52 people, 27 of whom worked on lines 21 and 27 and 25 for subcontractor Rattin AG; management was not included in these figures because it had been transferred to VBSH. In 2019, RVSH merged with Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen to form Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen vbsh, ending the separate existence of the RVSH brand. The merged entity continues to operate public transport in the canton.
History
The origins of Regionale Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen (RVSH) lie with the Strassenbahn Schaffhausen–Schleitheim (St.S.S.), a tramway that opened on 8 August 1905 with its terminus in the Schleitheim district of Oberwiesen. Goods traffic on the line began on 26 September 1905. On 28 May 1962, the voters of the Canton of Schaffhausen decided to convert the ageing tramway to bus operation. The bus service, Autoverbindung Schaffhausen–Schleitheim (ASS), began on 1 October 1964. At the same time, the ASS took over the Postauto line Schleitheim–Beggingen. In May 1968, the municipality of Gächlingen was connected to the ASS network. In November 2000, the canton's voters approved by a large majority the conversion of ASS into a joint-stock company under the name Regionale Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen RVSH AG. In July 2003, RVSH signed a cooperation agreement with Postauto Schweiz. With the integration of four former Postauto lines (lines 22 to 25) in the canton, a network of five regional bus lines under unified management and a new brand name, SchaffhausenBus, was created. In December 2013, the S-Bahn Schaffhausen began operating on the railway line Schaffhausen–Wilchingen/Hallau–Erzingen (part of the German Hochrheinbahn). As a feeder bus from Oberhallau/Hallau and Wilchingen/Osterfingen to Wilchingen-Hallau station, the new line 27 was opened. Until then, these villages had been served by the German Südbadenbus GmbH (SBG). Since this was now purely Swiss domestic traffic, SBG would have had to establish a Swiss headquarters for the concession renewal. SBG continues to operate cross-border services in the upper part of the canton between Stein am Rhein and the German town of Singen am Hohentwiel, as well as towards Öhningen and Radolfzell. Line 28, also newly opened in December 2013, is operated by subcontractor Weder Transport, Schaffhausen. In 2019, RVSH merged with Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen to form Verkehrsbetriebe Schaffhausen vbsh, ending the separate corporate existence of RVSH.
