Overview

Refugi Vicenç Barbé, also known as Refugi d'Agulles, is a guarded mountain refuge in the Montserrat Natural Park in Catalonia, Spain. It sits at 890 metres altitude in the municipality of El Bruc (Anoia), in the western part of the Montserrat massif, surrounded by the iconic rock needles (Agulles) that give the area its name. It is the only guarded refuge in the Montserrat massif and serves as a base for hikers, climbers and excursionists exploring the Agulles and Frares regions. The refuge is named after Vicenç Barbé Lladós, a prominent Barcelona climber who died in 1942 while climbing the Agulla de la Caputxa in the Frares Encantats area of Montserrat. It was inaugurated on 15 January 1961, an initiative of the Delegació Catalana de la Federació Espanyola de Muntanyisme, the predecessor of today's Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya (FEEC), with collaboration from the Diputació. The FEEC continues to own and operate the refuge. The small white building has a capacity of 20 people with bunk beds, mattresses, blankets and pillows. It is open on weekends and offers amenities including water, electricity, a wood stove, a first-aid kit, a toilet (limited by rainwater availability), indoor sandals and a bar service with breakfast, dinner and picnic options throughout the day. During the week the refuge remains closed, and visitors must call the warden to arrange opening; meals require reservation because supplies are brought in on foot. The refuge offers various marked routes, including circuits around the Agulles region, the volta a les Agulles, the traverse to the monastery via the GR 172, and the PR-C 78 long-distance path that passes by the refuge. It is also a staging point for some 900 classic and sport climbing routes on 160 rock needles and peaks. Access is on foot or by vehicle. By car, one can drive to Coll de Can Maçana or to the Montserrat Monastery. On foot, the refuge is about 45 minutes from Coll de Can Maçana, 1 hour 30 minutes from El Bruc, 2 hours from Santa Cecília, and 4 hours from the Montserrat Monastery. The refuge is a key piece of Catalonia's mountain hut network and a popular destination for climbers and hikers in the Montserrat massif.

History

The Refugi Vicenç Barbé was built on the initiative of the Delegació Catalana de la Federació Espanyola de Muntanyisme, the Catalan delegation of the Spanish Mountaineering Federation, which is now the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya (FEEC). The refuge was inaugurated on 15 January 1961, with collaboration from the Diputació (provincial council). It was named in memory of Vicenç Barbé Lladós, a prominent Barcelona climber who died in 1942 while climbing the Agulla de la Caputxa in the Frares Encantats area of Montserrat. Since its inauguration, the refuge has been owned and managed by the FEEC. It is the only guarded refuge in the Montserrat massif and has served generations of climbers and hikers exploring the Agulles and Frares regions. The area, being the most remote from the monastery environment, has remained wilder, attracting mountaineers and climbers of all kinds. The refuge continues to operate as part of the FEEC's network of mountain huts, offering accommodation and services on weekends.
