Overview

Refugi Sant Jordi is a mountain refuge in the municipality of Guardiola de Berguedà, in the Berguedà comarca of Catalonia, Spain. It sits at an altitude of 1,561 metres on the eastern slope of the Coll de Pendís, next to the Font del Faig, within the area of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. The refuge is owned and managed by the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya (FEEC), the Catalan federation of hiking clubs, and forms part of its network of staffed and unstaffed mountain huts. The history of the refuge begins in 1951, when the Catalan delegation of the then Spanish Mountaineering Federation adapted the old Hostal de la Font del Faig as a refuge. The building's poor condition later led the owners to cede a neighbouring plot to the FEEC so that a new refuge could be built. With financial support from the Diputació de Barcelona, the new facility was inaugurated in October 1961. Its architectural structure has been maintained and is the same design used at the refuges of Estanys de la Pera and Serra d'Ensija. Today Sant Jordi is described as a welcoming and comfortable refuge. The refuge is a waypoint on several long-distance hiking routes, including the Cavalls del Vent, the Alta Ruta del Cadí, Muntanyes Màgiques and the Camí dels Bons Homes. Access on foot is possible from various points: from Bagà in about 3 hours, from Prat d'Aguiló in 4 hours, from the Rebost refuge in 3.5 hours, from the Niu de l'Àliga in 5 hours, and from the Coll de Pendís in 30 minutes. The approach via the PR-C 125, a scenic path through the Empedrats and the old royal road of Cerdanya along the Pendís river valley, is particularly recommended. By vehicle, a forest track leads from Bagà to l'Hostalet, where the walking route begins, and other tracks approach from Gréixer or from Riu de Cerdanya towards the chain near the Coll de Pendís. For climbers and hikers, the star ascent of the area is Penyes Altes del Moixeró (2,276 m), the most charismatic peak of the Moixeró range. The refuge has a capacity of 10 places with mattresses when no warden is present. It is a modest but strategically located facility that serves as a base for exploring the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park and the surrounding mountains.

History

The Refugi Sant Jordi was established in 1951, when the Catalan delegation of the then Spanish Mountaineering Federation (Federación Española de Montañismo) adapted the old Hostal de la Font del Faig as a mountain refuge. The hostel was located in a strategic spot at the foot of the Coll de Pendís, in what is now the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. Over time, the building's precarious state led its owners to cede a neighbouring plot of land to the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya (FEEC) so that a new refuge could be built. With economic support from the Diputació de Barcelona, the new facility was constructed and inaugurated in October 1961. The architectural structure of the building has been maintained to the present day and is the same design used for the refuges of Estanys de la Pera and Serra d'Ensija. The refuge has since become a welcoming and comfortable stop for hikers. It is a waypoint on several long-distance routes, including the Cavalls del Vent, the Alta Ruta del Cadí, Muntanyes Màgiques and the Camí dels Bons Homes. The approach via the PR-C 125, which follows the Empedrats and the old royal road of Cerdanya through the Pendís river valley, is a recommended excursion. The area's most famous ascent is Penyes Altes del Moixeró (2,276 m), the highest and most charismatic peak of the Moixeró range. The refuge offers 10 places with mattresses when no warden is present.
