Overview

The Refugi Prat d'Aguiló "Cèsar August Torras" is a staffed mountain hut located at 1,997 metres in the Cadí range, within the municipality of Montellà i Martinet in the Cerdanya comarca of Catalonia, Spain. It sits on the north face of the Serra del Cadí, below the Pas dels Gosolans, and forms part of the network of staffed huts managed by the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya (FEEC). The hut is included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. The original refuge was inaugurated on 31 October 1927 by the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya (CEC) as a free mountain shelter, named after Cèsar August Torras, a former president of the CEC. It had capacity for 32 people and included a fireplace and chimney, but suffered neglect and progressive demolition from 1936 onwards. In 1976, on the occasion of the CEC's centenary, ICONA built a new refuge near the remains of the old one, inaugurated on 24 October 1976, perpetuating the name Cèsar August Torras. In 1978, ICONA transferred ownership to the Montellà i Martinet town council, which later ceded management in collaboration to the FEEC. The current hut maintains its original two-storey structure from 1976 but has been adapted to modern needs, offering 32 places, half-board service (dinner, accommodation, breakfast), Wi-Fi, webcam, showers, toilets, a multi-purpose room, and first-aid service. It is open from 1 June to 30 September; outside this period, a winter or emergency shelter with 15 sleeping places remains open, equipped with 5 mattresses, 5 blankets, timer lighting, and an annex for cooking. The hut is a key access point to the Cadí massif, especially for ascending Comabona (2,548 m) or traversing the Cavalls del Vent and Alta Ruta del Cadí routes. Since 1996, the hut keeper has been Jordi Sabaté Moure. In 2026, the 50th anniversary of the hut's inauguration was commemorated with institutional and popular events organised by the FEEC and local entities, highlighting the hut's role in promoting hiking and knowledge of the Cadí massif. The refuge has become a reference facility in the Catalan Pyrenees for hiking, educational activities, and discovery of the natural environment.

History

The history of the Refugi Prat d'Aguiló begins with the original refuge inaugurated on 31 October 1927 by the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya (CEC). It was a free mountain shelter named after Cèsar August Torras, a former president of the CEC who had died some years earlier. The original hut had capacity for 32 people and included a fireplace and chimney. However, from 1936 onwards it suffered poor treatment and was progressively demolished. In 1976, on the occasion of the centenary of the CEC, the Instituto para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (ICONA) built a new refuge near the remains of the old Cèsar August Torras refuge. This new hut was inaugurated on 24 October 1976 and perpetuated the name Cèsar August Torras. Two years later, in 1978, ICONA transferred ownership to the Ajuntament de Montellà i Martinet, which subsequently ceded management in collaboration to the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya (FEEC). The 1976 structure was very simple, with only bunk beds for 20 people, a couple of tables, and a fireplace. Over time, various modernisation and improvement works have been carried out. Notable interventions in recent years include the comprehensive renovation of the photovoltaic installation in 2014, the rehabilitation of part of the roof, and the replacement of the septic tank, both carried out in 2020. In 2026, the 50th anniversary of the hut's inauguration was commemorated with various institutional and popular events organised by the FEEC and local entities, which highlighted the hut's role in promoting hiking and knowledge of the Cadí massif. During this period, the refuge has consolidated as a reference facility in the Catalan Pyrenees, both for hiking and for educational and nature discovery activities.
