Overview

Refugi Estanys de la Pera is a mountain refuge owned and managed by the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya (FEEC), the Catalan federation of hiking clubs. It stands at 2,357 metres above sea level on the southern slope of the Port de Perafita, beside the Estanys de la Pera (Pera lakes), within the municipality of Lles de Cerdanya in the Cerdanya comarca of Catalonia, Spain. The building was inaugurated in 1957 and follows the same architectural pattern as the FEEC's Sant Jordi and Serra d'Ensija refuges, sharing a single entrance design across the three facilities. The refuge is a key waypoint on the GR 11.10, one of the variants of the great transpirenaic long-distance path that links the Cerdanya with the Principality of Andorra. It is also served by the GR 10 and GR 11 long-distance trails. The surrounding terrain is characterised by largely rounded mountain profiles, making the area well suited to summer hiking and, in winter, to ski mountaineering and snowshoeing. Summer is considered an ideal season for family visits because access is relatively quick and easy. Access is on foot or by mountain track. By vehicle, visitors take the LV-4036 road from Martinet towards Arànser, cross the village and continue up to the car park of the Aransa cross-country ski station; from there a well-marked path behind the ski-station restaurant leads to the refuge in about 2 hours 15 minutes. In August a shuttle bus operates from Cap de Rec (Lles de Cerdanya) and from the El Fornell restaurant (Aransa) to Pollineres. On foot, the refuge is about 45 minutes from the Font de les Pollineres and about 2 hours 15 minutes from the Aransa Nordic ski station car park. The nearest villages are Arànser (about 3 hours 15 minutes on foot) and Lles (about 3 hours 30 minutes), and the nearest refuge is Cap del Rec (about 2 hours). When no warden is present, the refuge offers basic unstaffed material: four places to sleep, a table, a bench, a wood-burning stove and firewood, plus lighting. The refuge is a base for ascents and traverses including Tossa Plana de Lles (2,916 m) and La Muga (2,860 m). As part of the FEEC refuge network, it is a commercial mountain-hospitality offering rather than a standalone company, and it remains active today.

History

Refugi Estanys de la Pera was inaugurated in 1957, making it one of the older mountain refuges in the FEEC network. It was built at 2,357 metres on the southern slope of the Port de Perafita, beside the Estanys de la Pera, in the municipality of Lles de Cerdanya in the Cerdanya. The building follows the same architectural pattern as the FEEC's Sant Jordi and Serra d'Ensija refuges, with a single entrance design shared across the three facilities. From its opening, the refuge served hikers on the long-distance paths that cross the area. Today it is a waypoint on the GR 11.10, one of the variants of the great transpirenaic long-distance route that connects the Cerdanya with the Principality of Andorra, and it is also passed by the GR 10 and GR 11 trails. Its location beside the Pera lakes and below rounded peaks such as Tossa Plana de Lles (2,916 m) and La Muga (2,860 m) made it a natural base for summer excursions and, in winter, for ski mountaineering and snowshoeing. Over time the refuge has been integrated into the FEEC's managed refuge system, with seasonal warden service and published opening calendars and prices. The federation's official page describes the equipment, access routes and services, including a winter-season price note for meals and other services from November to April. When no warden is present, the refuge provides basic unstaffed material: four places, a table, a bench, a wood-burning stove, firewood and lighting. Access infrastructure has also evolved, with a vehicle track from Arànser or Lles to the Font de les Pollineres followed by about half an hour on foot, and an August shuttle bus from Cap de Rec and El Fornell to Pollineres. The refuge remains active as part of the FEEC network.
