Overview
Refugi de Rebost is a mountain refuge located at 1,640 metres altitude beneath the Pedró dels Quatre Batlles (La Tosa), on the south-eastern slope of Comabella, in the municipality of Bagà, in the Berguedà comarca of Catalonia, Spain. It lies within the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park and is operated by the Unió Excursionista de Catalunya (UEC), specifically the UEC de Bagà delegation. The refuge is guarded year-round and offers up to 50 places, with an adjacent free refuge building providing 28 additional places. The refuge sits on the Cavalls del Vent traverse circuit and is a waypoint on the GR-4-2 and GR-150 long-distance footpaths. It is also the start and end of the PR126, features 10 Permanent Orienteering Circuits (created in November 2015), and lies on the Transpirinenca mountain-bike route. From the refuge, visitors can undertake numerous excursions in the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, including ascents of La Tosa, the Penyes Altes de Moixerò and Puigllançada. Access is possible by private vehicle via the asphalted BV-4024 road from Bagà to Coll de Pal, followed by a 1 km walk on a marked forest track from Collet Roig. On foot, the refuge can be reached from Bagà (3:30 h via GR-150 or GR-4.2), from La Molina (4 h via GR-4.2), from Refugi Sant Jordi (4 h), from Refugi Niu de l'Àliga (2 h) and from Refugi Erols (3:30 h). The refuge occupies a building that was formerly the threshing floor (era) of a farmhouse that worked the surrounding fields, owned by Mr. Casals of Solsona, known as el Xarnego. The farmhouse itself was already known as "el Rebost" (the pantry) because of the large quantity and variety of foodstuffs stored there. After the Spanish Civil War the farmhouse was abandoned and became property of the Bagà town council in 1948. On 7 December 1954 the council ceded the old threshing floor and farmhouse to the UEC de Bagà for 25 years, on condition that the threshing floor be converted into a mountain refuge and the farmhouse into a free refuge. Works were carried out by the UEC de Bagà with the unpaid collaboration of members and volunteers, and the mountain refuge was officially inaugurated on 25 September 1955. The free refuge in the old farmhouse was inaugurated on 2 November 1958. In February 1984 the Bagà council extended the cession to the UEC de Bagà for a further 25 years, on condition that the refuge always remain open. In 1990 a significant reform and expansion added a floor, showers and toilets, and two lateral annexes, allowing the inauguration on 10 June 1990 of the enlarged refuge with capacity for up to 70 places. In 2001 the current wardens, Anna Mañach and Marc Gascó, took charge of the refuge. Today the refuge serves hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders exploring the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, offering accommodation, information on itineraries and orienteering circuits. It remains a key node in the network of UEC mountain refuges in Catalonia.
History
The building that now houses Refugi de Rebost was originally the threshing floor (era) of a farmhouse that cultivated the surrounding fields, owned by Mr. Casals of Solsona, known as el Xarnego. The farmhouse was already called "el Rebost" (the pantry) because of the large quantity and variety of foodstuffs stored there. After the Spanish Civil War the farmhouse was abandoned and in 1948 it became property of the Bagà town council. On 7 December 1954 the Bagà town council ceded the old threshing floor and farmhouse to the UEC de Bagà for a period of 25 years, on the condition that the threshing floor be converted into a mountain refuge and the farmhouse into a free refuge. The works were carried out by the UEC de Bagà with the unpaid collaboration of members and volunteers. The mountain refuge was officially inaugurated on 25 September 1955. However, it was not until 13 September 1974 that wardens were placed in the mountain refuge. A year later, works began to adapt the old farmhouse "el Rebost" as a free refuge, which was inaugurated on 2 November 1958. In February 1984 the Bagà town council extended the cession of the refuge to the UEC de Bagà for a further 25 years, on the condition that the refuge always remain open. The year 1990 was also significant: a reform and expansion added a floor, installed showers and toilets, and extended the refuge with two lateral annexes. This allowed the inauguration on 10 June 1990 of the enlarged refuge with a capacity of up to 70 places. In 2001 the current wardens, Anna Mañach and Marc Gascó, took charge of the refuge. In 2005 the 50th anniversary was celebrated and a book was published with memories of half a century of history of the UEC de Bagà. In November 2015, 10 Permanent Orienteering Circuits were created at the refuge. Today the refuge remains a key facility in the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, offering year-round guarded accommodation and serving as a waypoint on the Cavalls del Vent, GR-4-2, GR-150 and PR126 routes, as well as the Transpirinenca BTT route.
