Overview

Refugi de Broate is a mountain refuge owned by the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya (FEEC), the Catalan hiking federation. It sits at an altitude of 2,222 metres in the Vall de Cardós, on a hill on the left bank of the Broate river, east of the Estany de la Pleta de Broate, within the municipality of Lladorre in the Pallars Sobirà comarca and inside the Alt Pirineu Natural Park. The refuge was inaugurated on 25 September 1988 and is one of the two FEEC facilities of this kind in the Cardós valley, alongside the Mont-roig refuge. It is a free, unguarded metal bivouac-type shelter with a capacity of nine places. It is equipped with an emergency radio transmitter connected to the fire brigade. Because it is an emergency refuge, its use is restricted: it may not be used for leisure activities, overnight stays are allowed only when strictly necessary, and access is permitted only in case of emergency, accident, or severe weather. Users are asked not to leave food, waste, or personal items behind and to respect the interior and surroundings. Access is on foot only. From the Montalto dam (1,382 m), before the Pla de Boavi, hikers cross the plain to the end where the Noguera de Lladorre is crossed. From the Broate waterfall, the route follows the Broate river up to the refuge, passing near attractive cascades. The walk takes about 2 hours 45 minutes for 750 metres of elevation gain. The refuge serves as a base for ascents of the border ridge mountains to the north and for approaches to the Pica d'Estats or the Sotllo from this solitary valley, allowing the excursion to be split into two days.

History

Refugi de Broate was inaugurated on 25 September 1988. It was built by the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya (FEEC) in the Vall de Cardós, one of the most isolated and wild areas of the Pyrenees. It is one of two FEEC refuges of this type in the Cardós valley, together with the Mont-roig refuge. The refuge is a free, unguarded metal bivouac-type shelter with nine places, located at 2,222 metres on a hill on the left bank of the Broate river, east of the Estany de la Pleta de Broate, in the municipality of Lladorre, Pallars Sobirà, within the Alt Pirineu Natural Park. It has an emergency radio transmitter connected to the fire brigade. Its remote location makes it a staging point for climbs on the border ridge to the north and for approaches to the Pica d'Estats or the Sotllo from the valley, allowing excursions to be split into two days.
