History
Refugi d'Airoto, also known as Refugi de Gràcia, originated as an old Canadian-style cabin that was ceded by the company Hidroelèctrica de Catalunya to the Unió Excursionista de Catalunya (UEC). After rehabilitation, it was inaugurated as a free mountain refuge on 6 October 1991. The inauguration marked the final event of the programme celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the UEC de Gràcia. The cabin was named 'Gràcia' in commemoration of that fiftieth anniversary. Since then, the refuge has been maintained by UEC de Gràcia and serves as a base for mountaineering activities in the area, including ascents of Tuc de Marimanya (2,679 m), Pic de Bacivers (2,720 m), Pic de Qüenca (2,638 m) and Pic del Rosari (2,608 m). It is located at 2,199 metres altitude, at the foot of Pic de Qüenca, about 400 metres from the southern end of Estany d'Airoto, in the municipality of Alt Àneu, Pallars Sobirà, within the Alt Pirineu Natural Park. The refuge is unguarded and has 12 places. Access is on foot only: about 3 hours from the village of Isil via the Airoto ravine, or 4 hours from Montgarri.
