Overview
Refinitiv was a global financial-information and market-infrastructure business created in 2018 from the Financial & Risk division of Thomson Reuters. Its business combined long-established Reuters financial-data operations with trading venues, data feeds, investment research, analytics, indices, risk-management tools and compliance information. The company served banks, asset managers, hedge funds, broker-dealers, corporations, wealth managers, governments, regulators and other professional users rather than retail consumers. The business emerged from a restructuring of Thomson Reuters in which the company sold a 55 percent majority stake in its Financial & Risk division to investment firm Blackstone. The transaction separated the financial-data operation from Thomson Reuters' other activities and created a new company under the Refinitiv name. The portfolio inherited substantial technology, content and customer relationships from Reuters and Thomson Reuters, including the Reuters news service, Reuters Instrument Codes, real-time market-data feeds, financial fundamentals, estimates, fixed-income analytics and electronic-trading capabilities. Refinitiv's best-known user-facing product was Eikon, a professional desktop and workflow platform used for market monitoring, financial research, portfolio analysis, trading and collaboration. Workspace was introduced as a more modern, web-oriented successor and extension to Eikon, with products designed for investment management, wealth management, investment banking and other professional workflows. Refinitiv also operated or supplied Elektron, a family of low-latency data distribution and connectivity services; Refinitiv Data Platform, which provided cloud and API access to financial datasets; and a range of transaction and execution services, including FXall and related foreign-exchange workflow capabilities. The business also had an important risk and compliance franchise. World-Check supplied information used for know-your-customer, sanctions, politically exposed person and third-party screening. Enhanced Due Diligence supplied investigative research and background-checking services for organizations assessing bribery, corruption, money-laundering, reputational and other financial-crime risks. The wider portfolio included Lipper fund research and analytics, Refinitiv indices, the Refinitiv Business Classification, economic and company data, wealth-management tools, digital identity and fraud-prevention services, and data-management technology. In August 2019, London Stock Exchange Group agreed to acquire Refinitiv in an all-share transaction valued at approximately US$27 billion in enterprise value. The transaction was strategically important for LSEG because it expanded the exchange operator from a primarily market-infrastructure and trading business into a much broader provider of financial data, analytics, capital-markets technology and risk services. European Commission approval was conditional on remedies, and LSEG pursued the sale of certain Italian assets, including Borsa Italiana, to address competition concerns before completing the Refinitiv acquisition on January 29, 2021. After completion, Refinitiv operated as part of LSEG rather than as an independent listed company. David Craig served as CEO during the transition and left LSEG at the end of 2021. LSEG progressively integrated Refinitiv's people, products and technology into its Data & Analytics, FTSE Russell and Risk Intelligence divisions. In August 2023, LSEG announced the retirement of the Refinitiv name, beginning with the renaming of Refinitiv Workspace to LSEG Workspace. LSEG subsequently stated that the Refinitiv brand had been fully retired, although some legal entities, legacy URLs and operational systems continued to carry the name for administrative purposes. Accordingly, Refinitiv is best understood today as a retired corporate brand and historical predecessor to substantial parts of LSEG's data and…
History
Refinitiv's history is rooted in the development of Reuters and Thomson Reuters as providers of financial news, market quotations, company information and professional data services. Reuters built a substantial financial-information business around electronic market data, news distribution and financial messaging. Following the 2008 combination of Thomson Corporation and Reuters Group, those activities became part of Thomson Reuters and were expanded into a broad Financial & Risk division serving institutional financial markets. The Financial & Risk division supplied information and technology to investment banks, asset managers, hedge funds, broker-dealers, corporations and other professional users. Its portfolio included Reuters real-time data feeds, Reuters Instrument Codes, financial fundamentals, estimates, research, fixed-income analytics, trading connectivity, risk tools, Eikon and other desktop products. Eikon itself had been introduced by Thomson Reuters in 2010 as a successor to Reuters 3000 Xtra, reflecting the industry's shift toward integrated desktop workflows combining data, news, analysis and communications. In October 2018, Thomson Reuters sold a 55 percent majority stake in Financial & Risk to a consortium led by Blackstone. The transaction separated the unit from the rest of Thomson Reuters and established Refinitiv as a new company. The new name was intended to signal a technology- and data-oriented business with a large installed customer base, global operations and a portfolio spanning data platforms, trading venues, analytics, indices, risk intelligence and financial workflow applications. Thomson Reuters retained a minority interest, while Blackstone became the principal financial sponsor during the period before the LSEG transaction. Refinitiv operated in a market dominated by large professional-data vendors and specialized infrastructure providers. It competed through the breadth of its content, the historical depth of Reuters data, low-latency distribution, open APIs, desktop workflows and products that combined market information with trading, investment, wealth and compliance use cases. Eikon remained the principal professional terminal, while Refinitiv Workspace represented a more flexible, web-oriented evolution. Elektron and Refinitiv Data Platform addressed data distribution, application development and enterprise integration. The company's risk business centered on World-Check, enhanced due diligence, identity verification and fraud-prevention capabilities. The business also expanded through acquisitions and product development. Scivantage was acquired in 2020 to strengthen digital wealth-management capabilities, including tax reporting and client-experience tools. Refinitiv acquired ASI, a digital advice platform, during the same year. It agreed to acquire GIACT Systems, a U.S. provider of digital identity, payments verification and fraud-prevention services, and acquired the Red Flag Group to broaden enhanced due diligence and workflow data. These transactions reflected a strategy of extending beyond traditional market-data terminals into digital wealth, enterprise risk, anti-financial-crime and identity services. In August 2019, LSEG agreed to acquire Refinitiv in an all-share transaction valued at approximately US$27 billion. The proposed combination would join LSEG's exchanges, clearing and capital-markets infrastructure with Refinitiv's global data, analytics and workflow businesses. The transaction attracted regulatory scrutiny because of the parties' positions in financial-market infrastructure and data. The European Commission granted conditional approval in January 2021, and LSEG pursued the divestment of Borsa Italiana and related Italian assets as part of the regulatory path to completion. LSEG completed the acquisition on January 29, 2021. Refinitiv shareholders received a significant minority economic and voting interest in the enlarged LSEG, while Refinitiv's operations became part of LSEG's broader organizational structure. David Craig led Refinitiv through the acquisition and integration period but left LSEG at the end of 2021. The products were progressively repositioned within LSEG Data & Analytics, FTSE Russell, LSEG Risk Intelligence and related divisions. The Refinitiv name was retired in stages. In August 2023, LSEG announced that Refinitiv Workspace would become LSEG Workspace. LSEG's current transition materials state that the Refinitiv brand has been fully retired, although legacy legal entities, websites and backend systems may continue using the name for operational reasons. Refinitiv therefore remains historically important as the corporate identity that housed a major portion of LSEG's modern data, analytics and risk businesses, but it no longer operates as a standalone brand.

Controversies
2019
Filtering of Reuters coverage on Chinese Eikon terminals
In 2019, reports stated that Refinitiv removed or filtered Reuters stories concerning the Tiananmen anniversary and Hong Kong protests from Eikon terminals in mainland China after pressure from Chinese regulators. The incident generated criticism because Refinitiv distributed Reuters content while operating under local regulatory requirements, creating a conflict between censorship compliance, editorial independence and customer access to information.
