Overview
Record Brasília is a Brazilian television station operating on channel 8 in Brasília and serving the Federal District and nearby areas. It is an owned-and-operated local station of Grupo Record and carries the programming of Record, supplemented by locally produced journalism, public-affairs content and regional versions of network formats. Its studios are located in the Record Building in Brasília's Southern Radio and Television Sector, while its digital transmission facilities are associated with the Digital TV Tower of Brasília in Lago Norte. The station began broadcasting on April 21, 1960, the date Brasília was inaugurated as Brazil's federal capital. It originally operated as TV Alvorada, one of the capital's first television stations. During its early years, the broadcaster experienced repeated changes in ownership, affiliation and operating identity. It carried programming associated with TV Excelsior and later the Rede de Emissoras Independentes, before being sold in 1972 to the Order of Capuchin Friars Minor. That ownership group's plans for a broader national network did not succeed, and financial difficulties eventually led government technicians to seal the station's facilities and transmitters in January 1976. The channel returned to the air in 1978 under the name TV Itamaraty, and then became TV Regional in 1979. Grupo Brasilino's bankruptcy in 1980 again took the station off the air. It was reactivated in August 1981 as TV Capital under Rede Capital de Comunicações. In the 1980s, it successively carried programs from TVE Rio de Janeiro, Abril Vídeo, TV Record and TV Gazeta. From 1989 onward, it increasingly carried Record programming, including national news and entertainment attractions, creating the foundation for its later integration into Rede Record. Grupo Record acquired TV Capital during the network's expansion in the early 1990s. The station adopted the name TV Record Brasília on March 18, 1993, and subsequently expanded its local news operation. Its first major local news identity, Informe Brasília, launched in 1993 and was renamed Informe DF in 2003. In 1997, the broadcaster moved into a purpose-built headquarters in the Southern Radio and Television Sector, leaving its earlier facilities at the Brasília TV Tower. The station went through several network-branding phases while maintaining its Brasília focus. It became TV Record Centro-Oeste in 2008, returned to the TV Record Brasília name in 2011, and adopted the RecordTV Brasília identity in November 2016 as part of Grupo Record's broader brand reformulation. Local news formats introduced or developed during this period included DF Record, DF no Ar, Balanço Geral DF, Balanço Geral Manhã, Cidade Alerta and the entertainment-news segment Hora da Venenosa. These programs reflect the station's central role in translating Record's national television offer into locally relevant news and commentary. Record Brasília's core business is regional free-to-air television. Its schedule combines Record network programming with local newscasts, service journalism, crime and public-safety coverage, political reporting, lifestyle material and entertainment segments. The station remains positioned as a Brasília-focused broadcaster within the national Grupo Record system rather than as an independent national network.
History
Record Brasília traces its history to the creation of television in Brazil's new federal capital. Channel 8 VHF was inaugurated on April 21, 1960, alongside Brasília's other pioneering television stations, under the name TV Alvorada. The station was associated with Rede das Emissoras Unidas and initially operated from improvised premises. Its studio facilities at the Brasília TV Tower were completed only in 1965. During the late 1960s and 1970s, TV Alvorada changed affiliations and ownership several times. It carried TV Excelsior-related programming in 1967 and later became part of the Rede de Emissoras Independentes structure. In 1972, it was sold to the Order of Capuchin Friars Minor, which also controlled TV Difusora in Porto Alegre. The intended expansion into a larger national network did not materialize. After mounting payroll and operational problems, DENTEL technicians sealed the station's transmitters and studios on January 16, 1976. The channel's assets were sold to Grupo Brasilino in 1978. The new owners relaunched it as TV Itamaraty and then TV Regional, with a schedule built around independently sourced series, films and cartoons. Grupo Brasilino went bankrupt in July 1980, taking channel 8 off the air once more. On August 26, 1981, the station returned as TV Capital, created by Rede Capital de Comunicações under businessmen Edevaldo Alves da Silva and Arnold Fioravante. It carried TVE Rio de Janeiro programs during part of the first half of the 1980s, considered but did not complete an affiliation with SBT, and later retransmitted Abril Vídeo programming. The station's relationship with Record developed during the second half of the decade. In 1986, TV Capital resumed carrying part of TV Record's output. In 1988 it also retransmitted TV Gazeta material, including news, talk and business programs. From August 1989, the schedule again included Record-produced programs such as Record em Notícias and Jornal da Record alongside TV Gazeta attractions. This arrangement continued until the formation and expansion of Rede Record after its acquisition by Edir Macedo. Grupo Record acquired TV Capital in the early 1990s as part of Rede Record's national expansion. The station adopted the TV Record Brasília name on March 18, 1993. That year it launched the local news program Informe Brasília, renamed Informe DF in 2003. In 1997, the broadcaster established its own headquarters in Brasília's Southern Radio and Television Sector, replacing its older TV Tower facilities. The local operation continued to grow through the 2000s. DF Record launched on April 3, 2006, following Record's standardized naming for local news programs. Balanço Geral's local edition began on January 15, 2007, with Henrique Chaves. On February 18, 2008, the station became TV Record Centro-Oeste, opened a new newsroom and began producing local broadcasts from the new facility. DF no Ar premiered on February 20, 2008, initially presented by Luiz Fara Monteiro. The station later received four Engenho de Jornalismo awards in 2008. In 2009, Luiz Cláudio Costa became director of TV Record Centro-Oeste, while the station's former director Natal Furucho moved to lead Grupo Record activities in Rio Grande do Sul. The broadcaster returned to the TV Record Brasília name in February 2011. Subsequent schedule changes included the launch of Balanço Geral Manhã in 2014, the introduction of Hora da Venenosa in 2015 and the 2016 recruitment of Marcão do Povo for Balanço Geral DF. Henrique Chaves was shifted toward the local Cidade Alerta project, which premiered in October 2016. On November 24, 2016, the station adopted the RecordTV Brasília brand. It continues to operate as a Record station serving Brasília and the Federal District.
