Overview

Real Art Ways Cinema is the cinema offering of Real Art Ways, described in its own materials as an alternative multidisciplinary arts organization that presents and supports contemporary artists and their work. Real Art Ways was founded in 1975 by a group of visual artists and musicians in Hartford, Connecticut, and later evolved into a non-profit organization. Its programming includes gallery exhibitions, independent cinema, performances, social events, educational programs, and spoken word.

History

In the fall of 1975, a group of visual artists and musicians took over an upstairs space at 197 Asylum Street in downtown Hartford and created a salon where they lived, worked, and presented the work of others. Concerts, exhibitions, and performances brought Real Art Ways local prominence and then regional and national attention. Early highlights included the Ornette Coleman Festival, a John Cage premiere with a national broadcast, and the New Music America Festival. Director Joseph Celli led the organization in its first decade. After losing three locations within ten years, Real Art Ways landed in 1989 in a small space in front of 56 Arbor Street in Hartford's Parkville neighborhood. Under new director Will K. Wilkins, the organization regrouped and commissioned public art projects. In 1994, Real Art Ways signed a 30-year lease on an empty warehouse space in the rear. The organization later evolved into a non-profit with a mission to support innovative artists and connect people with new ideas.
