Overview

Rappertshofen is a non-profit institution for people with physical and multiple disabilities, based in Reutlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It operates under the umbrella of Habila GmbH and is located on the boundary between the Rommelsbach and Orschel-Hagen districts of Reutlingen. Founded in 1894 as a 'Landarmenanstalt' (rural poorhouse) for 155 people, it has evolved into a modern complex institution offering residential care, day support, and decentralized community-based services. The core facility provides stationary residential places, a workshop for disabled people (WfbM), and a broad range of day-care services including occupational therapy, special education, art therapy, sports therapy, senior care, animal-assisted activities, and computer-assisted learning. A specialized unit offers neurological long-term care for people with severe neurological damage, including coma. The residential area holds a care contract under SGB XI, allowing residents to receive full nursing care insurance benefits. In recent years, Rappertshofen has pursued a decentralization strategy, establishing small residential groups and outpatient services in Reutlingen, Tübingen, and Nürtingen. As of the source, 190 people live in the core facility and 75 are supported in decentralized housing. The institution emphasizes self-determination and full participation in society for people with disabilities. A support association (Förderverein) aids activities such as leisure trips and vacations.

History

Rappertshofen was founded in 1894 as a 'Landarmenanstalt' (rural poorhouse) for initially 155 people, with the aim of caring for sick homeless individuals and providing them with work in the institution's own agriculture. By around 1905, the facility was so overcrowded that the building was expanded to accommodate an additional 200 people, particularly mentally ill persons from all parts of Württemberg and Hohenzollern. During the Nazi dictatorship, in 1940, a total of 73 people from Rappertshofen were deported as part of the 'Euthanasia' Action T4 and murdered in the Grafeneck killing center on the Swabian Alb. After World War II, Rappertshofen served as a central state home for the elderly for all of Baden-Württemberg. In the years 1970–1976, the site was completely rebuilt by the responsible body, the Landeswohlfahrtsverband Württemberg-Hohenzollern, into a complex institution for up to 260 people with physical and multiple disabilities. In recent years, a main goal has been the decentralization of services from the core facility into surrounding cities and municipalities. Today, 190 people live in the core facility Rappertshofen, and 75 people are currently supported in decentralized housing.
