Overview
RaiSat was an Italian television subsidiary and channel brand created by Rai in 1997 to develop thematic services for satellite television. It represented Rai's early attempt to extend public-service programming beyond its general-interest terrestrial channels and into a more segmented, multichannel environment. Its programming covered culture, education, cinema, entertainment, sport, cooking, history, children's television, and television fiction. The operation began with a group of free-to-air services launched in 1997 and 1998, including Rai Sat 1, Rai Sat 2, Rai Sat 3, and Rai Sat Nettuno. Rai Sport Satellite followed in 1999. On 29 July 1998, the channel activities were placed within RaiSat S.p.A., an external company structure intended to manage the thematic services. In July 1999, Rai personnel working on the channels were transferred into the company, and the services became part of the first pay-satellite channel offer developed for the Tele+ platform. The move to pay television led to a substantial expansion and repositioning of the portfolio. The former educational and general thematic services were reorganized into channels such as RaiSat Ragazzi for children and teenagers, RaiSat Gambero Rosso for cooking, RaiSat Cinema for film, RaiSat Album for history and archival memory, RaiSat Show for entertainment, RaiSat Art for art and cultural heritage, and RaiSat Fiction for television series. The channels were initially associated with D+, later Tele+ Digitale, and then with Sky Italia after Sky's launch in 2003. During the Sky period, RaiSat streamlined its portfolio. Several channels were discontinued or consolidated, while the surviving services were incorporated into the Mondo Sky package. The principal channels became RaiSat Ragazzi, RaiSat Gambero Rosso, RaiSat Cinema World, RaiSat Prem1um, and RaiSat Extra. Later changes included the restoration of the RaiSat Cinema name and the division of RaiSat Ragazzi into RaiSat YOYO for preschool viewers and RaiSat Smash for older children and teenagers. RaiSat Smash was subsequently renamed RaiSat Smash Girls in 2009. The decisive turning point came in 2009, when Rai and Sky failed to renew the agreement under which Sky distributed the RaiSat bouquet. Rai therefore moved the remaining services away from Sky's pay platform and reduced the portfolio. RaiSat Gambero Rosso was sold, RaiSat Smash Girls was closed, and RaiSat Extra, RaiSat Prem1um, RaiSat Cinema, and RaiSat YOYO became available through digital terrestrial television, the Tivùsat satellite platform, and Rai's online services. The change reflected Rai's effort to retain distribution through free-to-air and public-service-oriented outlets rather than continue the existing exclusive pay-TV arrangement. RaiSat ceased to exist as a separate company when Rai absorbed it on 18 May 2010. Before the absorption, Rai held 95 percent of the company and RCS MediaGroup held 5 percent; RCS's interest was liquidated on 18 March 2010. The surviving channels were renamed without the RaiSat prefix: RaiSat Extra became Rai Extra, RaiSat Prem1um became Rai Premium, RaiSat Cinema became Rai Movie, and RaiSat YOYO became Rai Yoyo. Rai Extra was later closed in 2010 and replaced by Rai 5. RaiSat is therefore best understood as a discontinued Rai thematic-channel operating structure whose principal services were integrated into Rai's broader channel portfolio.
History
RaiSat emerged during the expansion of multichannel television in Italy. Rai created the company in 1997 to develop thematic satellite services that could complement its traditional general-interest channels. The initial offering included Rai Sat 1, Rai Sat 2, Rai Sat 3, and Rai Sat Nettuno, with Rai Sport Satellite added in 1999. These services covered culture, entertainment, children’s programming, encyclopedic and educational material, university-related content, and sport. On 29 July 1998, the channels were outsourced to RaiSat S.p.A., giving the operation a distinct corporate structure. In 1999, Rai converted the satellite services into a pay-TV proposition. The channels were encrypted and made available through the D+ and later Tele+ Digitale platforms. The portfolio became more specialized, with RaiSat Ragazzi aimed at children and teenagers, RaiSat Gambero Rosso devoted to cooking, RaiSat Cinema focused on films, RaiSat Album covering history and collective memory, RaiSat Show dedicated to entertainment, RaiSat Art presenting art and cultural heritage, and RaiSat Fiction carrying television series. This period established RaiSat as a thematic-channel producer rather than simply a group of free Rai extensions. When Sky Italia began operating in 2003, RaiSat reorganized its services for the new platform. RaiSat Art, RaiSat Fiction, RaiSat Album, and RaiSat Show were removed as separate channels or consolidated into other services. The main surviving channels in Sky's Mondo package were RaiSat Ragazzi, RaiSat Gambero Rosso, RaiSat Cinema World, RaiSat Prem1um, and RaiSat Extra. RaiSat Prem1um combined elements of the former album and fiction services, while RaiSat Extra continued the entertainment role associated with RaiSat Show. Further changes followed in 2006. RaiSat Cinema World returned to the shorter RaiSat Cinema name, and RaiSat Ragazzi was divided into RaiSat YOYO and RaiSat Smash. The split differentiated preschool programming from content aimed at older children and teenagers. RaiSat Smash became RaiSat Smash Girls in January 2009 and closed in July of the same year. The end of the Sky relationship transformed RaiSat's distribution strategy. Rai and Sky did not renew the agreement for the RaiSat bouquet in 2009. The remaining channels therefore left the Sky pay-TV package and were made available through digital terrestrial television, Tivùsat, and Rai's online service. The reduced set consisted of RaiSat Extra, RaiSat Prem1um, RaiSat Cinema, and RaiSat YOYO. RaiSat Gambero Rosso was sold, while the youth channel was discontinued. Corporate ownership also changed as the brand approached its end. Until March 2010, Rai owned 95 percent of RaiSat and RCS MediaGroup owned the remaining 5 percent. RCS's interest was liquidated on 18 March 2010. On 18 May 2010, Rai absorbed RaiSat into the parent organization. The surviving services were renamed Rai Extra, Rai Premium, Rai Movie, and Rai Yoyo, eliminating the RaiSat label and placing the channels directly under Rai's operating structure. Rai Extra was subsequently closed and replaced by Rai 5. RaiSat was consequently a discontinued company and brand, but several of its thematic-channel concepts continued within Rai's later television lineup.
