Overview

The Railway Inn is a country pub, restaurant, self-catering cottage and caravan park business in Acklington, Northumberland, in the United Kingdom. Its site began as an 1800s two-up, two-down farmhouse; the inn as it exists today was established in 1890, when an enterprising farmer expanded the property to accommodate paying guests. From 1923 to 1954 the owners trained racehorses on the site, and photographs of some of Mr Webb's winning horses are displayed at the inn. During the Second World War era an R.A.F. base stood about two miles away, and officers including Peter Townsend visited regularly. Today the business is owned by the White family, who have 30 years' experience in the leisure industry. It operates a caravan park and campsite open 365 days a year, with pitches starting at £35 per night, three country cottages available for hire through cottages.com, and a pub and restaurant serving locally brewed real ales and food, open from 12pm Wednesday to Sunday. Bookings are taken by telephone or mobile.

History

The Railway Inn occupies a site that began as an 1800s two-up, two-down farmhouse. The inn as it is known today was established in 1890, when an enterprising farmer decided to expand the property to accommodate paying guests. From 1923 to 1954, the owners trained racehorses on the site; one of those owners is pictured on the wallpaper of the restaurant, and photographs of some of Mr Webb's winning horses are also on display at the inn. Before, during and after the Second World War, an R.A.F. base was located just two miles from the inn, and many R.A.F. officers visited regularly, including Peter Townsend, remembered as Princess Margaret's first love; his legacy survives in the name of Acklington's Townsend Court. The business is now owned by the White family, who have 30 years' experience in the leisure industry. In its present form it combines a pub and restaurant, three country cottages and a caravan park and campsite open 365 days a year.
