Overview

Rai 3 BIS FJK (Rai 3 BIS Furlanija Julijska Krajina) is a Slovenian-language television channel produced by Rai Friuli Venezia Giulia, the regional branch of Italy's state broadcaster Rai – Radiotelevisione Italiana. It is aimed at the Slovene minority living in the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and it complements the region's dedicated Slovenian-language radio network, Rai Radio Trst A, which also serves Slovene communities in Slovenian and Croatian Istria. The channel's name combines the national Rai 3 brand with the Slovenian acronym for the region, Furlanija Julijska Krajina (Friuli Venezia Giulia). Television programming in Slovenian began in 1995, when Rai 3 BIS FJK was created alongside the existing radio service Rai Radio Trst A. For its first years the television signal was limited to the provinces of Trieste and Gorizia. In December 2010, like all other public and private broadcasters in the region, the channel migrated from analogue to digital terrestrial transmission, which extended its reach to the whole of Friuli-Venezia Giulia together with the radio service. Since then the channel has been carried on the regional digital terrestrial multiplexes, and from 18 December 2020 it also became available on the Tivùsat satellite platform alongside all regional versions of Rai 3. From 3 March 2022 it has been visible on digital terrestrial television together with all regional versions of Rai 3. The channel broadcasts on channel 3 and 810 of digital terrestrial television across Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Aosta Valley. Except for live coverage of exceptional events, it transmits from about 18:40 to 22:30, repeating the national Rai 3 signal for the rest of the day. Its schedule includes self-produced programmes such as Alpe Jadran, Dokumentarec, Firbcologi, Izbiramo za vas, Lynx Magazine, Koncert, Mikser, Primorska kronika, Promemoria, Prvi odcep desno, Rai3/Oddaje vsedržavne mreže, Sprehodi, TDD Predstavlja, Tv Kocka, Tv Oddaje na spletu and Utrip Evangelija. Its main news programme is TDD – Televizijski Deželni Dnevnik, the regional television news bulletin in Slovenian, which moved to digital technology on 19 January 2015 together with its Italian-language counterpart. The regional headquarters in Trieste manages its own website, created by RaiNet, where the full weekly schedule of Rai Friuli Venezia Giulia's television and radio networks can be consulted and programmes can be watched live, replayed and downloaded as podcasts. The headquarters also operates the 'Teca aperta' service, an initiative of the Rai Direzione Coordinamento Sedi Regionali, which offers access by reservation to a large multimedia catalogue of more than 300,000 hours of television programmes, 350,000 hours of radio programmes, 15,000 hours of news bulletins and 35,000 photographs, with scripts, posters and other archive material on display. In May 2014, for the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the regional headquarters, the channel's studios were opened to the public with a guided historical tour, and Rai's leadership visited the Trieste site.

History

Rai 3 BIS FJK traces its origins to the need to serve the Slovene minority in the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Television programming in Slovenian began in 1995, when Rai 3 BIS FJK was created, adding a television service to the already existing radio service Rai Radio Trst A. The channel was initially available only in the provinces of Trieste and Gorizia. In December 2010, Rai 3 BIS FJK, like all other public and private broadcasters in the region, migrated from analogue to digital terrestrial transmission. This historic technological transition extended the channel's signal, previously limited to Trieste and Gorizia, to the entire regional territory, together with the radio signal of Rai Radio Trst A. From 6 to 8 May 2014, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the regional headquarters, the channel's studios were opened to the public with a guided historical tour. On 4 July 2014, Rai president Anna Maria Tarantola and general director Luigi Gubitosi visited the Trieste headquarters, re-establishing with the president of the Region Debora Serracchiani the Rai-Regione Autonoma technical table for the development of new collaborations between the two bodies. On 19 January 2015, TDD (the Slovenian-language TGR) together with its Italian-language counterpart, after those of Lazio, Lombardy, Molise and Sicily, switched to digital technology; the switch-off occurred at the same time as the broadcast of the 20:30 TDD. From 18 December 2020, the channel became visible on the Tivùsat satellite platform together with all regional versions of Rai 3. From 3 March 2022, the channel became visible on digital terrestrial television together with all regional versions of Rai 3. The regional headquarters in Trieste also operates the 'Teca aperta' service, an initiative of the Rai Direzione Coordinamento Sedi Regionali, offering access by reservation to a vast multimedia catalogue of more than 300,000 hours of television programmes, 350,000 hours of radio programmes, 15,000 hours of news bulletins and 35,000 photographs, with scripts, posters and other archive material on display.
