History

According to the station's own account, Radio Libertà was founded after 25 years of activity of Radio Padania Libera, which had last become RPL – La tua radio. The station states that a cycle has ended and a historical-political era is coming to an end, characterized by an evolution toward an increasingly less pluralistic media system, even though channels of expression have apparently multiplied, especially in the digital and social world. It describes this as apparent liberty, with voices tending increasingly to conform. From this came the push toward a refoundation of the radio medium that it says it has tried to keep alive over the years. It adopts the motto 'renewal in continuity,' which it attributes to the communists of the post-war period, with reference to the need for 'liberty' that it wanted to emphasize in the name of its journalistic outlet. The original name of RPL was Radio Varese, described as the radio of the three monkeys. Radio Varese was launched on 28 February 1976 on the initiative of the future minister Roberto Maroni, some of his classmates from the Liceo Classico Cairoli, and their philosophy teacher. Radio Varese's broadcasts were transmitted via a radio bridge connecting the main office in via Walder with an office located at Campo dei Fiori.
