Overview

Radian Memory Systems is a data center storage company that has redefined Flash management to enable the next generation of data center storage. The company takes a system-driven approach to memory management, using patented technology to unlock the native potential of Flash memory and deliver performance and cost efficiencies with the functionality required of data center class products. Its technology targets system OEMs, cloud and service providers, and licensing to device-based manufacturers to support storage requirements throughout the data center. Radian's product line includes Flash SSDs and NVRAM SSDs in U.2 and Edge Card form factors. Flash SSD models include the RMS-350 (U.2), RMS-325 (Edge Card), and RMS-250 (U.2). NVRAM SSD models include the RMS-375 (U.2), RMS-300 (Edge Card), and RMS-200 (Edge Card). The RMS-350 supports Cooperative Flash Management configurations for either Zoned Namespaces (ZNS), the original Symphonic API, or an Open-Channel 2 compliant interface, in a U.2 form factor with Dual Port or Single Port configurations, offering up to 12GB PMR style User NV-RAM and up to 16TB Flash. Radian's award-winning Zoned Namespaces (ZNS) implementation simplifies integration while providing optimized performance. The company has been active in the storage standards and developer community, completing integration of its Zoned Flash SSD with SPDK, passing ZNS compliance testing, and collaborating with IBM Research on the integration of its Zoned Flash SSD with IBM's SoftwAre Log Structured Array (SALSA) storage stack. Radian won Flash Memory Summit's Most Innovative Technology award for SSD Firmware in 2019, and was named to CIO Review's '20 Most Promising Storage Solutions Providers' in 2017. Its technology has also been adopted by partners such as Viking Technology, which introduced the VT-PM family of NVMe U.2 Persistent Memory Drives based upon technology from Radian Memory Systems.

History

Radian Memory Systems was founded to address the limitations of conventional SSDs in data center environments. The company's core thesis is that conventional SSDs cannot deliver the capacity, performance, or endurance of their own raw Flash because of the Flash-Translation-Layer (FTL), which abstracts Flash management processes such as garbage collection and wear leveling and emulates hard drives for backwards compatibility. This abstraction significantly reduces the native performance and cost metrics available from raw NAND memory, a problem Radian describes as the "SSD Delta." To solve this, Radian developed a system-driven approach to memory management, branded as Cooperative Flash Management (CFM) and the Symphonic API. This approach moves Flash management decisions from the device to the host system, allowing software to manage Flash more efficiently. Radian's patented technology targets system OEMs, cloud and service providers, and licensing to device-based manufacturers. By 2016, Radian was presenting its ideas at industry events, including SNIA's Storage Developer Conference, where it discussed the tradeoffs of FTL, Open-Channel, and Cooperative Flash Management. In 2017, the company was named to CIO Review's "20 Most Promising Storage Solutions Providers." In 2018, Radian announced the RMS-350 CFM SSD with OC2 on U.2, and Viking Technology introduced the VT-PM family of NVMe U.2 Persistent Memory Drives based upon technology from Radian Memory Systems. Radian became a leading proponent of Zoned Namespaces (ZNS), a standardized interface that aligns with its cooperative approach. In 2019, the company demonstrated Zoned Namespaces at SDC '19, won Flash Memory Summit's Most Innovative Technology award for SSD Firmware, and presented live performance benchmarks comparing Zoned Namespaces to FTL SSDs. In 2020, Radian passed ZNS compliance testing, completed integration of its Zoned Flash SSD with SPDK, and published a case study on IBM Research's integration of Radian's Zoned Flash SSD with IBM's SoftwAre Log Structured Array (SALSA) storage stack. The company continues to offer Flash SSDs and NVRAM SSDs in U.2 and Edge Card form factors, along with its Flash management software.
