Overview

RADA Electronic Industries Ltd. was an Israeli defense-technology company that developed and manufactured radar, avionics and data-recording equipment for military and aerospace customers. Founded in 1970 by David Reitner, the company began as an Israeli electronics business and built a long-standing position in aviation electronics and mission-data systems before shifting its strategic emphasis toward compact, software-defined tactical radar. Its legacy portfolio included aircraft avionics, digital video and data recorders, ground debriefing systems and inertial-navigation equipment. These products served defense aviation and other aerospace applications, where the ability to record, analyze and manage mission data was central to aircraft operation and maintenance. RADA's R-200M inertial-navigation product used microelectromechanical-systems technology, while its DVDR and GDS products addressed flight recording and post-mission analysis. The company's most consequential transformation occurred during the 2010s, when it concentrated investment and commercial activity on tactical radar. Its Multi-mission Hemispheric Radar family was designed for short-range air defense, counter-unmanned-aircraft systems, counter-rockets, artillery and mortars, and active-protection systems for armored vehicles. The radars were software-defined and intended to provide hemispheric sensing in mobile, networked and highly contested battlefield environments. This focus moved RADA closer to the vehicle-protection and maneuver-air-defense markets than to the traditional aircraft-avionics niche. RADA expanded its U.S. presence through RADA USA, including a headquarters and manufacturing facility in Germantown, Maryland. The American operation supported development, production and customer engagement for the U.S. military market. During 2017 and 2018, RADA radar systems were associated with several prominent defense programs and integrations, including a U.S. Marine Corps deployment, Rafael's counter-drone solution for the British Army, Leonardo DRS's mission-equipment package for the U.S. Army's Initial Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense system, and the Iron Fist active-protection system. The company benefited from rising military demand for counter-drone and short-range air-defense capabilities. In 2020, General Dynamics Land Systems received a major U.S. Army award to produce IM-SHORAD systems incorporating RADA's Multi-mission Hemispheric Radar. This program gave RADA exposure to a large vehicle-based air-defense requirement and helped establish its radar technology as a component of broader prime-contractor systems rather than a complete end-user solution by itself. RADA remained listed on the Nasdaq Capital Market for much of its independent corporate life, having traded there since 1985. In June 2022, Leonardo DRS agreed to acquire RADA's U.S. subsidiary through an all-share transaction. The combination was completed later in 2022, with RADA shareholders receiving a minority interest in the combined business and Leonardo retaining the controlling interest. The transaction ended RADA's existence as an independent public company and placed its tactical-radar activities within Leonardo DRS's defense-electronics portfolio. Accordingly, RADA is best understood today as a former independent Israeli brand and technology business whose products and capabilities were absorbed into the Leonardo DRS organization.

History

RADA Electronic Industries was established in Israel in 1970 by David Reitner. The company developed a durable business in defense and aerospace electronics, with early and longstanding activities in aircraft avionics, mission-data recording and related systems. Its products served military and aerospace operators that required onboard recording, navigation, avionics management and post-flight analysis. The company's management changed significantly during the late 1990s and 2000s. In 1998, Herzl Bodinger became president and chief executive officer after the retirement of a preceding chief executive. Bodinger had led RADA's international marketing activity and its U.S. subsidiary, and had previously commanded the Israeli Air Force. In 2007, Zvi Alon, who had been involved in marketing and sales and had earlier participated in the Lavi aircraft project, became chief executive officer. In November 2016, RADA appointed Dov Sella, its chief business development officer, as executive officer. RADA's strategic direction changed during the 2010s. Rather than relying primarily on legacy avionics and recording products, it increasingly concentrated its resources on software-defined tactical radar. The company's radar family was designed for several related battlefield requirements: active protection for armored vehicles, short-range air defense for maneuver formations, counter-unmanned-aircraft missions and counter-rocket, artillery and mortar applications. The hemispheric radar architecture was intended to provide wide-area sensing around mobile platforms and to integrate with effectors and command systems supplied by larger defense contractors. The United States became an important market and industrial base. RADA established RADA USA and opened a headquarters and manufacturing site in Germantown, Maryland. This presence supported local production, business development and relationships with U.S. defense customers. In 2017, RADA supplied more than one hundred radar systems to the U.S. Marine Corps. In 2018, its radars were associated with several integration programs, including Rafael's counter-unmanned-aircraft capability for the British Army, Leonardo DRS's mission-equipment package for the U.S. Army's IM-SHORAD system, a U.S. Department of Defense counter-UAS system and the Iron Fist active-protection system being considered for U.S. Army armored vehicles. In 2019, RADA technology was reported in connection with a U.S. Marine Corps counter-drone operation in the Strait of Hormuz in which an Iranian unmanned aircraft was brought down. The episode increased the visibility of tactical counter-UAS systems, although RADA was a sensor and technology supplier rather than the sole provider of the complete detection, identification, tracking, jamming or defeat chain. The company's tactical-radar strategy gained further validation in 2020 when General Dynamics Land Systems received a major U.S. Army award to produce, test and deliver IM-SHORAD vehicles incorporating RADA's Multi-mission Hemispheric Radar. The program connected RADA's products to a major U.S. Army maneuver-air-defense requirement and demonstrated the company's role as a subsystem supplier within prime-contractor architectures. RADA traded on the Nasdaq Capital Market from 1985. In June 2022, Leonardo DRS agreed to an all-share acquisition involving RADA's U.S. subsidiary. The transaction was completed later in 2022 and created a combined defense-electronics business in which RADA shareholders retained a minority stake and Leonardo held the majority. The combination ended RADA's status as an independent public company. Its radar capabilities and related business activities continued within Leonardo DRS, while the standalone RADA corporate identity ceased to operate as an independent listed entity.
