Overview

R7 is a Brazilian internet portal created in 2009 and belonging to Grupo Record. It is one of the country's largest news and entertainment websites, producing content with the support of the structures of Record, Record News and their affiliates across Brazil. The portal was launched on 27 September 2009, the same day Rede Record celebrated its 56th anniversary, with an estimated investment of R$300 million and a team of 300 professionals at launch. In 2017, R7 announced on its own site that it had become the fifth-largest portal in Latin America. R7's editorial output spans breaking news, politics, sports, entertainment, weather and service journalism, and it operates a 'Tudo Sobre' topic index that aggregates news, videos and reports on themes moving Brazil and the world. It has historically been closely integrated with Grupo Record's television assets: in July 2010 the group concentrated its advertising structures so that Record, Record News and R7 were commanded by the same commercial directorate, enabling cross-media ad sales. The portal has also served as a digital distribution platform for Record programming, notably streaming the reality show A Fazenda live 24 hours a day starting with its third season in September 2010. In terms of audience, R7 surpassed 150 million unique visitors in May 2014, opening a lead of 12.6 million unique visitors over Globo.com and narrowing the gap with segment leader UOL to 4.4 million. At the end of 2014 it was the leading Brazilian brand in Facebook engagement according to ComScore, and it ranked as the second-largest content portal by Ibope/Nielsen and ComScore that year. By 2020, ComScore placed it as the ninth most-visited site in Brazil. The portal has partnerships with outlets such as CinePOP and Jornal Opção, and maintains a presence on Facebook, X and Instagram. R7 has been led by a succession of directors and editors, including Antonio Guerreiro, Luiz Cesar Pimentel, Dado Lancellotti, André Forastieri, Flávio Ricco and Augusto Nunes. In 2018 it faced controversy over allegations that its editorial line, like that of Jornal da Record, carried a pro-Jair Bolsonaro political bias during that year's elections. R7 remains an active Brazilian digital news brand under Grupo Record.

History

R7 was launched on 27 September 2009, the same day Rede Record completed 56 years of operation. The project represented an estimated investment of R$300 million and debuted with a team of 300 professionals. It was created as the internet portal of Grupo Record, producing content with the support of the structures of Record, Record News and their affiliates and affiliated stations across Brazil. In early 2010 the portal introduced a page entirely dedicated to Carnival. It went on to develop various specials, including Summer, Christmas, Children's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day and Valentine's Day. From May 2010, the humor blog Te Dou Um Dado, an internet phenomenon, joined the portal's roster of blogs. In July 2010, Grupo Record decided to concentrate its advertising structures, placing Record, Record News and R7 under the same commercial directorate. This integration facilitated commercial sales by bundling multiple formats across different media and gave the market a cross-media advantage. On 28 September 2010, the reality show A Fazenda 3 premiered on Rede Record with a novelty: users could watch the reality show live, 24 hours a day, through R7, which drove growth in the portal's email service. In October 2010, Antonio Guerreiro replaced Fábio Tucilho as general director of the portal; Guerreiro had previously served as R7's general director of content. In May 2013, Guerreiro, already leading the portal, also became director of new media, the department responsible for interactivity and mobile services, the sector handling Grupo Record's digital content distribution platforms. Luiz Cesar Pimentel, formerly chief of the newsroom, became Content Director. In April 2014, Dado Lancellotti, one of the portal's founders, left R7 to pursue his own project, handing his commercial directorate role to Luciano Vaz; the operations directorate went to Aline Sordili, who was later dismissed from Grupo Record in December 2024. Also in April 2014, journalist André Forastieri joined R7 as Executive Editor of Entertainment and Marcio Zebini as General Manager of New Business. In 2017, the portal launched a new homepage designed to offer faster and more fluid navigation. In 2020, journalist Flávio Ricco, a television critic, joined Portal R7 as a columnist and presenter; during his time there he presented O Programa de Todos os Programas on the portal's YouTube channel. After four years, Ricco left Portal R7 in September 2024 and subsequently launched his column on Portal Léo Dias in October of the same year. In January 2021, Grupo Record announced journalist Augusto Nunes as newsroom director of R7.com; however, in July 2021 Nunes resigned from his roles as newsroom director and Jornal da Record News presenter, citing personal reasons, though he remained a commentator on Jornal da Record. In terms of audience, in May 2014 R7 surpassed 150 million unique visitors, opening a lead of 12.6 million unique visitors over Globo.com. The gap with segment leader UOL fell from 17.5 million to 4.4 million, a 62% reduction and the smallest difference in history. At the end of 2014, the site was the leading Brazilian brand in Facebook engagement according to a ComScore survey. In 2014 it was the second-largest content portal according to Ibope/Nielsen and ComScore, and it ranked fifth among the most-visited sites in Brazil. R7 does not appear among Brazil's most-accessed sites according to Amazon technology measurement. Among the most-visited sites in 2020, Globo.com appeared sixth, behind only Google, YouTube, Mercado Livre and Facebook. Also in 2020, according to ComScore, R7 was the ninth most-visited site, after Google, Facebook, UOL, Globo.com, Microsoft, Caixa Econômica, B2W sites (owner of Submarino and Americanas.com) and Terra. R7 has partnerships with sites and newspapers including CinePOP and Jornal Opção. It maintains an official site and presences on Facebook, X and Instagram. In 2018, R7 was controlled by the same editorial line as Jornal da Record, which was accused by RecordTV journalists of being directed with a pro-Jair Bolsonaro political bias during that year's elections.
