Overview
R. Ruth Oy is a Finnish family-owned corporate group headquartered in Jyväskylä, Central Finland. The group traces its origins to Robert Ruth (1854–1925), who began as a wholesale trader of rural produce and founded a retail store in Jyväskylä in 1883. After a fire destroyed the store, he used insurance compensation to establish the city's first wholesale business, which grew into Central Finland's largest intermediary for grain products and colonial goods. In 1906 he founded Jyväskylän Höyryleipomo (Jyväskylä Steam Bakery), and after his death the wholesale and bakery operations were consolidated into R. Ruth Oy, established in 1925. The company remained under the ownership of the Routti family throughout its history and is described as Jyväskylä's oldest trading company. During the 20th century R. Ruth was known as a significant wholesale and bakery business. Its wholesale operations were sold in 1980 to Pohjanmaa Oy, part of the Tuko group, and the national chemical wholesale business ceased in 1992. The bakery side was expanded with the acquisition of Herkkusuu Oy in 1992 and new facilities in Hämeenlahti, Jyväskylä, but in 2000 the bakery was sold to Fazer, which discontinued the Jyväskylä bakery. A new entrepreneur later revived baking in the premises as Ruthin Leipomo Oy in 2010. From the late 20th century the group refocused on car retail, restaurants and hotels. It entered the car business in 1963 by acquiring Jyväskylän Autotarvike Oy, which is today Finland's oldest Volkswagen dealer and also represents Audi, BYD, Citroën, Hyundai, Opel and Peugeot. Car operations expanded to Mikkeli and Savonlinna through the 2004 acquisition of Savilahden Auto Oy, and briefly to Keuruu (2007). Restaurant operations began with a café in 1955 and today include Kulttuuriravintola Ylä-Ruth in Jyväskylä and Villi Wäinö and Base Bar in Helsinki. In June 2018 the group acquired Mattilanniemen Hotelli Oy, operating Hotelli Alba in Jyväskylä. The group also has real estate rental operations through the Ruthinkulma property at the intersection of Yliopistonkatu and Kilpisenkatu in Jyväskylä, whose oldest part dates to 1908 and was renovated in the 1990s into commercial and office premises. R. Ruth Oy remains a private family company owned by the descendants of Robert Ruth. Its business is concentrated in Central Finland and Helsinki, with car dealerships in the Jyväskylä, Mikkeli and Savonlinna economic areas. The group emphasizes flexibility and traditional values in its operations.
History
The history of R. Ruth Oy begins with Robert Ruth (1854–1925), born in Auvila village in Jämsä, Finland, as the son of a tenant farmer. After his father's death, Robert worked as a farmer on the family farm and began trading rural goods. His actual merchant career started when he became a general merchant in Jyväskylä in 1883. The retail store was destroyed by fire five years later, but Ruth sold the burnt building and received fire insurance compensation, using the funds to establish Jyväskylä's first wholesale business. This wholesale operation grew into Central Finland's largest intermediary for grain products and colonial goods. In 1906 Robert Ruth founded Jyväskylän Höyryleipomo (Jyväskylä Steam Bakery). After his death, the wholesale and bakery operations were combined into R. Ruth Oy, established in 1925. The company has remained in the ownership of the Routti family and is considered Jyväskylä's oldest trading company. In 1955, the Jyväs-Hyvä crispbread and rusk production was separated into a limited partnership, and from 1993 the Jyväshyvä brand has belonged to Fazer. The first Ruth café opened in 1955 in central Jyväskylä on Asemakatu. Over the decades, R. Ruth's restaurant operations included cafés Robert and Kahvila-Myymälä as well as restaurants Ruthin Vintti and Ruthin Ravintola (Ylä-Ruth). In 1963 the group entered the car business by acquiring Jyväskylän Autotarvike Oy. In 1980 the wholesale business was sold to Pohjanmaa Oy, part of the Tuko group, and in 1992 the national chemical wholesale operations of R. Ruth also ceased. In 1992 Ruth acquired Herkkusuu Oy, and new facilities for the expanded bakery were completed in Hämeenlahti, Jyväskylä. In 2000 Ruth sold its bakery to Fazer and decided to focus on restaurant and car retail operations. Fazer discontinued the Jyväskylä bakery, but in 2010 a new entrepreneur started bakery operations in the premises under the name Ruthin Leipomo Oy. In the 2000s, restaurant operations expanded to Helsinki, where Ruth became majority owner of restaurants Kolme Kaisaa in Sörnäinen and Villi Wäinö at Kalevankatu 4. Car retail expanded to Mikkeli and Savonlinna through the acquisition of Savilahden Auto Oy in 2004, and for a couple of years also to Keuruu (Keuruun Autokeskus) in 2007. In June 2018 the group acquired Mattilanniemen Hotelli Oy, i.e. Hotelli Alba in Jyväskylä, expanding into the hotel sector. In autumn 2025 it was reported that Kolme Kaisaa would close its lease at the beginning of 2026, and a town plan change is pending for the block at Hämeentie 29, where the restaurant has operated since 1964, with one option being demolition of the building. Today R. Ruth Oy remains a family-owned conglomerate with car dealerships, restaurants, a hotel and real estate rental operations, primarily in Central Finland and Helsinki.
