R. Nussbaum AG is a Swiss developer, manufacturer and direct distributor of fittings and systems for sanitary and heating technology, headquartered at Martin-Disteli-Strasse 26 in Olten. Founded in 1903 by Marie and Rudolf Nussbaum-Bürgi as a trading business for fittings and plumbing tools, the company is today run by the fourth generation of the founding family and remains a privately held Swiss family business. It produces and sells valves for water distribution in buildings and public facilities, parks and gardens — including shut-off valves, pressure reducers, safety valves, fine filters, limescale protection devices and pipes — and also distributes fittings for gas distribution as well as for cooling and refrigeration circuits and compressed-air installations. The company was founded in 1903 as a trading business for fittings and plumbing tools by the married couple Marie and Rudolf Nussbaum-Bürgi in Olten. Four years later, in 1907, it began manufacturing its own products in a foundry. In 1920 the business was converted into a joint-stock company under the name R. Nussbaum & Co. AG. After Rudolf Nussbaum's death, the company passed to his four sons in 1928. They expanded the business and in 1968 handed over the operation — by then grown to 300 employees — to the third generation. The generational change at the end of the 1960s also brought a strategic shift: whereas small series had previously been produced, under the new leadership the company concentrated on the segment of building, industrial and laboratory fittings. Production facilities were subsequently expanded and a Switzerland-wide branch network was built up. At the end of 2002, the fourth generation — Dr. Roy Nussbaum and Urs Nussbaum — took over overall operational responsibility as delegates of the board of directors. Under the new leadership the company was continuously developed further: an automated central warehouse was commissioned in 2004, a new production plant in 2009, and the customer house "Optinauta" in Trimbach near Olten in 2011. New branches were opened in Gwatt-Thun (2008), Zug (2009), Buchs-SG (2011) and Winterthur (2014). Product innovations — such as the world's first launch of a nickel-free stainless-steel pipe generation in 2007 and Optiflex-Profix in 2009 — helped revenue exceed the CHF 170 million mark for the first time in 2010. At the beginning of 2012 the management board was expanded to six members with Michael and Andreas Nussbaum, also of the fourth family generation. Today the company remains a fourth-generation family business headquartered in Olten, with eighteen branches and its own online shop, and a significant part of its range manufactured in its own production facilities in Switzerland.
