Overview
R&C NAGANOSEIKA CO. LTD. (株式会社R&Cながの青果) is a Japanese fresh-produce (fruit and vegetable) wholesale company headquartered in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. It was established in April 2022 through the merger of two long-standing Nagano produce wholesalers, Nagano Prefecture Rengo Seika (長野県連合青果) and Choin (長印), which had already integrated under a joint holding company, R&C Holdings, in 2015. The company name combines the "R" of Rengo and the "C" of Choin. The company operates wholesale operations at six markets within Nagano Prefecture — Nagano, Ueda, Matsumoto, Saku, Nakano and Suzaka — and holds wholesale companies in the Kanto region under its group, including Choin Funabashi Seika (Funabashi and Ichikawa markets in Chiba), Gunma Ken'o Seika (Takasaki market in Gunma), Tokyo Fuji Seika (Itabashi market, Tokyo) and Tokyo Toshima Seika (Toshima market, Tokyo). Its business covers wholesale and consignment sales of fresh produce, processed produce and dried goods, and its group companies extend into intermediate wholesale, packaging, produce processing, production and logistics. According to Japanese Wikipedia, its handling volume ranks first among local wholesale market produce wholesalers nationwide, surpassing Tokyo Tama Seika, and third in the overall industry including central wholesale markets, after Tokyo Seika and Daika Osaka Seika. Its group as a whole ranks second in handling volume after the Tokyo Seika Group. The company positions its Nagano head office as a multifunctional core hub, its Ueda head office as a wide-area trading company, its Matsumoto branch as a regional hub for the central and southern Shinano area, and its Saku, Suzaka and Nakano branches as production-area markets serving highland vegetables and fruit-growing regions. The company's corporate philosophy centers on the spirit of "aggressive boldness" (積極果敢) and the management principle of "four-way goodness" (四方よし) — benefiting society, buyers, sellers and employees. Its stated mission is to distribute "good things" to support rich food culture in Shinshu and across Japan, emphasizing taste, safety, freshness and stability. It faces industry challenges including declining agricultural production population, climate change risk, declining consumption and the "2024 logistics problem" in Japan. The representative director and president is Yosuke Hori (堀 陽介).
History
The origins of R&C Naganoseika lie in two separate Nagano produce wholesalers. Choin (長印) traces its roots to a wholesaler founded in the Taisho era. Nagano Prefecture Rengo Seika (長野県連合青果), also known as Rengo Seika, expanded rapidly after World War II. Nagano Prefecture Rengo Seika's corporate lineage began in January 1964, when Ueda Seika Market Co. and Ueda Chuo Seika Wholesale Market Co. merged to form Ueda Chuo Seika Co. In February 1972 it established its first branch, the Saku Branch, in Saku City. In April 1974 it merged with Matsumoto Seika Market Co., establishing the Matsumoto Branch and changing its name to Nagano Prefecture Rengo Seika Co., Ltd. In April 1976 it established the Suwa Branch in Suwa City, and in October 1985 the Nagano Branch in Nagano City. In April 1994 it established the Omachi Office in Omachi City. In November 1996 it merged with Maruto Isezaki Seika Co. in Isezaki City, Gunma Prefecture, establishing the Isezaki Branch. In April 2000 it became the first company in the produce wholesale industry to obtain ISO 14001 environmental management certification. In December 2002 it invested in Tokyo Fuji Seika Co. (Itabashi Market, Tokyo Central Wholesale Market), making it a subsidiary and expanding into the Tokyo metropolitan area. In July 2013, marking its 50th anniversary, it announced a medium- to long-term vision, 'New Relation 2018'. In October 2015 it established a joint holding company, R&C Holdings Co., Ltd., with Choin Co. In April 2016 it acquired Daiei Co., a Suwa market intermediate wholesaler, through a business transfer. In May 2021 it acquired all shares of Gunma Ken'o Seika Co. at the Takasaki City General Local Wholesale Market, making it a subsidiary. In April 2022, Choin and Nagano Prefecture Rengo Seika integrated, establishing R&C Naganoseika Co., Ltd. Gunma Ken'o Seika took over the Isezaki Branch of Nagano Prefecture Rengo Seika through a company split, and the Isezaki market closed. The new company integrated overlapping offices (Nagano, Matsumoto, Saku). In May 2023 it announced that the Suwa Branch's business would be transferred to its subsidiary Daiei Co. by the end of June 2023. In June 2025 it announced the acquisition of shares in a newly established split company of Tokyo Toshima Seika, making it a subsidiary; Toshima Seika is headquartered at the Toshima Market of the Tokyo Central Wholesale Market with an Itabashi Branch at the Itabashi Market, and is one of two companies wholesaling at the redeveloping Itabashi Market alongside Tokyo Fuji Seika. The company operates a two-head-office structure: the former Choin head office, strong in market wholesale operations, is the 'Nagano Head Office', while the former Rengo Seika head office, which coordinates distribution as a wide-area trading company, is the 'Ueda Head Office'. It handles wholesale operations at six markets within Nagano Prefecture (Nagano, Ueda, Matsumoto, Saku, Nakano and Suzaka) and holds Kanto-area market wholesalers under its group. Its group companies cover intermediate wholesale, packaging, produce production and logistics. According to Japanese Wikipedia, a group formed by the capital integration of major wholesale markets within a prefecture is rare nationwide. Its produce handling volume ranks first among local wholesale market produce wholesalers nationwide, surpassing Tokyo Tama Seika, and third in the overall industry including central wholesale markets, after Tokyo Seika and Daika Osaka Seika; its group as a whole ranks second after the Tokyo Seika Group.
