History
The building at Circus 13 in Putbus, where rügendruck GmbH is located, has a history dating back to the 19th century. When Putbus became a spa resort in the 19th century, the 'Hotel d'Arcone' was built at Circus 13 in 1834/35, with plans from the classicism of the Berlin school around Karl Friedrich Schinkel, executed by Gottfried Steinmeyer. In 1859 the building was extended and a floor added. In 1927 the printer Paul Cummerow acquired the property for the 'Rügensche Zeitung', which had its headquarters there from 1929 after general renovation and the addition of operational buildings. In the 1970s, the 'Ostsee-Druck' was expanded again to make room for modern further processing. In the mid-1990s, the then owner, Grundstücksgesellschaft Jokiel GBR mbH, had the front building at Circus 13 completely reconstructed according to purely building-biological and ecological requirements. From 2008, the production rooms were also fundamentally renovated and additionally equipped with a newly built printing hall. Under the leadership of Jürgen Hinze, the traditional printing house thus also switched to digital production in a future-oriented manner. The company maintains a small printing museum in its 'KONTOR – DIE DRUCKBUDE', where historical printing machines formerly used by OSTSEEDRUCK are preserved, including a BOSTON TIEGEL, a hand press from 1910, a manual proof press, the mechanical PETZOLD from the 1970s, the electrically operated VICTORIA press, a TIEGEL letterpress machine (sheet format 39x28 cm) and the sheet-fed printing machine PHOENIX A (sheet format 26x36 cm). Also preserved are the KRAUSE cardboard/guillotine shear and a type cutting machine (1930s to 50s). A highlight is the POLYGRAPH line-casting and typesetting machine (1960s/70s), a Russian replica of the famous LINOTYPE.
