Overview
Río Primero is a municipality (municipalidad) in Córdoba Province, Argentina, located in the department of the same name about 50 km northeast of the provincial capital along National Route 19. It was founded on 25 September 1888 around a railway station built by the Ferrocarril del Este de Córdoba, which linked the city of Córdoba with the Santa Fe provincial boundary. The settlement grew from the nearby Villamonte estate and quickly attracted residents from surrounding areas. The municipality was formally created in 1907. In 1922 an electric power plant began serving the town, and a branch of the Banco de Córdoba opened in November of that year. A post office and the first medical clinic were put out to tender in 1924. During the last two decades of the 20th century the town consolidated its regional role through infrastructure and equipment works. Río Primero functions primarily as a service centre for an agricultural and livestock region. It also hosts some industrial establishments, especially in the eastern part of town, including factories producing precast concrete, batteries and moulds. The commercial sector includes clothing, home appliance, automobile, motorcycle and bicycle retailers. The town has multiple primary schools, including Colegio General San Martín, Colegio Capitán Ardiles and Colegio Myriam Hayquel, as well as secondary schools such as the public Instituto Provincial de Educación Media (IPEM) Nº 164 Ataliva Herrera and the private Instituto Contardo Ferrini (I.C.F.). Cultural life includes the traditional Carnavales, first held in 1915, and the Festi Río festival, staged since 2011 at the municipal sports ground with performances by well-known Argentine artists. According to INDEC, the population was 11,697 in 2022, up 37% from 7,389 in 2010. The official municipal website provides information, procedures, news and services for the community.
History
Río Primero was founded on 25 September 1888 around a station of the Ferrocarril del Este de Córdoba, a railway line built to connect the city of Córdoba with the limits of Santa Fe Province. The station was located about 3 km from the Villamonte estate, whose owner, Don Domingo Villamonte, had built the parish church Nuestra Señora de Copacabana, the first patroness of the area. After the railway opened, the first houses were built around the Río Primero station, and the new settlement quickly grew with inhabitants arriving from Villamonte and distant places. In its early decades the area was known for its sawmill settlements, where oak logs were felled and worked. Over time, precarious dwellings were established alongside those of Spanish settlers. Rural life continued, and the chapel and estate were preserved. In the 19th century there were also a sub-police station, a rural school and a justice of the peace. The municipality was created in 1907. In 1922 an electric power plant was installed, providing service to the entire town, and in November of the same year a branch of the Banco de Córdoba was established. In 1924 the first post office and the first medical clinic were put out to tender. During the last two decades of the 20th century, the town experienced marked regional consolidation, favoured by infrastructure and equipment works. Today Río Primero is primarily a service centre for an agricultural and livestock region, with some industrial establishments, especially in the eastern part of town. Its economy includes manufacturing of precast concrete, batteries and moulds, as well as a commercial sector with clothing, home appliance, automobile, motorcycle and bicycle stores. The town has several primary and secondary schools, both public and private. Cultural traditions include the Carnavales, first held in 1915, and the Festi Río festival, held since 2011 at the municipal sports ground. The population was 11,697 in 2022 (INDEC), up 37% from 7,389 in 2010.
