Overview
Réseau Action Climat – France was created in 1996 on the initiative of France Nature Environnement (FNE), WWF, Greenpeace and Les Amis de la Terre, to serve as the French network of associations specialised in climate questions and to be independent of public authorities. It became the French representative of Climate Action Network International, a global network of more than 1900 NGOs in 130 countries. The network later expanded to associations specialised in transport, the promotion of energy alternatives and international solidarity, forming a network of 27 national associations, and also created a college of local and regional associations and a college of individual members. In September 1996 it was created as an association under the French law of 1901, and in 1997 it was accredited at national level as an NGO observer to the UN Climate Convention, present at COP 3 in Kyoto and at all subsequent COPs.
History
Réseau Action Climat – France was created in 1996 on the initiative of France Nature Environnement (FNE), WWF, Greenpeace and Les Amis de la Terre, members of Climate Action Network International (CAN-International), to make it the French network of associations specialised in climate questions and to rely on this new structure independent of public authorities. It then became the French representative of Climate Action Network International, a global network that today brings together more than 1900 NGOs in 130 countries, whose aim is to encourage governments and citizens to take measures to limit the impact of human activities on the climate. Réseau Action Climat subsequently expanded to associations specialised in transport, the promotion of energy alternatives and international solidarity, now forming a network of 27 national associations. Finally, a college of local and regional associations and a college of individual members were created, involved personally or professionally in a theme linked to climate change. Key dates: in September 1996, creation of Réseau Action Climat, an association under the French law of 1901; in 1997, Réseau Action Climat – France was accredited at national level as an NGO observer to the UN Climate Convention and was present in that capacity at COP 3 in Kyoto and then at all the following ones; in 2000, the start of systematic monitoring of all national climate plans (PNLCC, Plan climat, Grenelle de l'environnement and the law on energy transition); in 2006, creation of Réseau Climat & Développement to better make heard the voices of the Global South.
