History

Quebec Life Coalition (Campagne Québec-Vie) was founded in 1989 as a Quebec-based pro-life association. It is a division of Campaign Life Coalition, a pan-Canadian pro-life organization. The founding member was Gilles Grondin (1926–2004). The organization advocates for the "inviolability of human life," opposing abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia, and human cloning, as well as same-sex marriage. It acts as a conservative pressure group, targeting students through publications distributed on university campuses, as well as younger audiences in CEGEPs and high schools, and also aims at the political sphere. From 2002 to 2009, Luc Gagnon served as president. In 2009, Luc Gagnon founded "Quebec Life Coalition" as the English-speaking division of the association. Since September 2009, Georges Buscemi has been the spokesperson and president. The organization has four full-time employees. It organizes the annual National March for Life in Ottawa, which is attended by a large part of the Canadian episcopate. The group participates in local demonstrations near Quebec clinics that perform abortions, stating it does not condone violence against clinic staff, though clinic staff report being harassed and intimidated. In 2014, the organization took part in pro-life protests against government funding of abortion in Quebec. In March 2019, it attempted to invalidate a legal provision prohibiting demonstrations within 50 meters of an abortion clinic. In July 2019, it launched a petition to support the screening of the pro-life film Unplanned and to convince Vincent Guzzo, owner of the Guzzo cinema chain, to show the film more widely. The organization has been involved in several controversies: in 2005, its congress was met with a protest by a collective called "Avortons leur congrès"; in September 2017, Georges Buscemi made remarks on homosexuality that were criticized; in April 2019, the president signed an open letter against Pope Francis, accusing him of heresy, which led some Quebec bishops to withdraw support from the National March for Life.
