Qualicaps (Japan)

Qualicaps Co., Ltd. is a Japanese company that develops and manufactures hard capsules for pharmaceuticals and health foods as well as pharmaceutical-related machinery, supplying these worldwide. Founded in 1965 as a joint venture between Shionogi & Co. and Eli Lilly, it was renamed Shionogi Qualicaps in 1998 and Qualicaps in 2005. It operates through the Qualicaps Group with sites in Japan, the United States, Canada, Spain, Romania and Brazil, and on 23 October 2023 integrated with the French company Roquette.

Qualicaps was established in April 1965 as Nippon Elanco Co., Ltd., a 50:50 joint venture between Shionogi & Co. and Eli Lilly. A Nara plant (Building 1) was completed in January 1966 in the Showa Industrial Park in Yamatokoriyama, and capsule production began in March 1966. In 1992 Shionogi acquired all of Eli Lilly's shares in the company. In April 1998 the company changed its name from Nippon Elanco to Shionogi Qualicaps. In December 2005 the shareholder changed from Shionogi to The Carlyle Group, the company was renamed Qualicaps Co., Ltd., and Qualicaps Europe S.A. (Spain) and Qualicaps Inc. (USA) became wholly owned subsidiaries. In March 2013 the shareholder changed from The Carlyle Group to Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corporation. In October 2023 the shareholder changed from Mitsubishi Chemical Group Corporation to Roquette, and the company integrated with Roquette on 23 October 2023.
