Overview

QJB: Querelles. Jahrbuch für Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung (commonly shortened to Querelles) is a peer-reviewed academic yearbook in the field of women's and gender studies, published by Freie Universität Berlin. It first appeared in 1996 and is issued once a year. Since 2000 it has been complemented by querelles-net, an online review journal for women's and gender studies. The publication is conceived as an interdisciplinary platform for gender research and is funded within the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) programme area for scholarly journals. The name Querelles refers to the European tradition of the Querelle des femmes, the passionate debates about gender relations that shaped European women's and gender history especially between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. The editors position the yearbook in that tradition, aiming to create a place of debate culture within women's and gender studies and a place of intellectual exchange between the genders. Querelles was founded in 1996 as the first cross-disciplinary yearbook in the field of women's and gender studies. It is published in connection with the series Ergebnisse der Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung at Freie Universität Berlin, a programme to support female academic early-career researchers. The yearbook seeks to give a platform to the many subject-specific, inter- and transdisciplinary publications in gender studies, to help build traditions by taking up central themes, and to analyse the history of science as gender history through selected examples. Scholarly reviews provide an overview of important publications and current research priorities, supplemented by a continuously updated bibliography of new releases in the field. From 1996 to 2002 the yearbook was published in a print edition by Metzler Verlag; from 2003 it appeared with Wallstein Verlag. After 15 issues it was converted to an open-access periodical in 2011. The DFG supports Querelles in its programme area "Wissenschaftliche Zeitschriften" (scholarly journals). In addition to the yearbook, querelles-net has appeared three times a year since 2000, carrying reviews of publications from all subject areas of women's and gender studies. Since 2020 querelles-net has been part of the Open Gender Journal. Querelles is designed according to the international standard for review journals: all contributions undergo a reliable peer-review procedure, and both German- and English-language contributions are published. Regarding publication frequency, the continuous release of individual articles is combined with an annual presentation in the yearbook. Each spring a thematic focus for the following year is set and announced in a Call for Papers. After a positive review procedure and copy-editing, contributions are published online immediately. Each October the essays on the thematic focus are assembled and published in the yearbook by rotating editors. A scholarly advisory board regularly advises on the orientation of the yearbook and on upcoming themes, based on developments in the relevant academic field and in women's and gender studies, and issues recommendations for its further development.
