Overview

Qatar Airways is the flag carrier of Qatar and the principal airline brand of Qatar Airways Group. Established by the Qatari government in 1993, it began operating scheduled services in January 1994 and developed from a small regional carrier into a major long-haul airline centered on Doha. Its principal hub is Hamad International Airport, which replaced Doha International Airport for the airline's main operations in 2014. The carrier uses a hub-and-spoke model to connect Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania through Qatar. Its network and fleet have expanded substantially through large orders for Airbus and Boeing aircraft, including the Airbus A350, Airbus A380, Boeing 777, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Boeing 777 freighter families. Qatar Airways Group also includes cargo, ground handling, catering and related aviation activities. Qatar Airways Cargo is an important part of the group and operates dedicated freighters alongside belly-hold cargo capacity on passenger aircraft. The airline became a member of the oneworld alliance in October 2013, strengthening its access to partner networks and reciprocal loyalty benefits. The brand's commercial positioning emphasizes premium service, modern aircraft, connectivity through Doha and a distinctive Qatari identity. Its Qsuite product, introduced for business class, is particularly associated with private suites, configurable seating and—in selected configurations—doors that can create shared spaces for passengers traveling together. Qatar Airways has repeatedly received high rankings and awards from Skytrax, helping establish an image built around five-star service. The group has been wholly owned by the Qatari state since 2013, after the government acquired remaining private interests. The airline has also been involved in disputes concerning alleged state support, competition, employee policies and working conditions. In addition, its senior leadership has attracted criticism over remarks about gender and over alleged lobbying or bribery-related controversies reported in Europe. Qatar Airways remains an active international airline and one of the most visible commercial institutions associated with Qatar, although the size of its network, fleet and workforce varies over time with market conditions, aircraft deliveries and geopolitical events.

History

Qatar Airways was created by the Qatari government on 22 November 1993 and began flying in January 1994. Its first destination was Amman. During its early years the airline operated a modest fleet and served regional, Asian and selected European destinations. Qatar had previously participated in Gulf Air, but withdrew fully in 2002 to concentrate on developing its own national carrier. Under the leadership of Akbar Al Baker from 1997, Qatar Airways pursued rapid fleet renewal and long-haul expansion. Airbus A320-family aircraft supported regional growth, while A330, A340 and later Boeing 777 aircraft enabled longer routes. In 2003 the airline introduced a dedicated freighter and placed a major Airbus order, while also becoming the first carrier audited under the new IATA Operational Safety Audit programme. It reported its first group profit for the financial year ending in March 2004. The carrier continued adding destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and North America during the 2000s. It introduced Australia services in 2009 and became an important connecting carrier between markets that did not have direct links. Fleet investment accelerated through orders for Airbus A350 aircraft, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Boeing 777s, Airbus A380s and freighters. Qatar Airways received its first Boeing 787 in 2012, becoming the first Middle Eastern airline to operate the type. It joined oneworld in October 2013, following a period of preparation mentored by British Airways. In the same year, Qatar Airways became fully state-owned after the Qatari government bought out remaining private interests. The airline moved its principal operations to the newly built Hamad International Airport in 2014. That year it received its first Airbus A380, while in December it became the launch customer for the Airbus A350-900. The A350 entered commercial service to Frankfurt in January 2015. Qatar Airways continued investing in premium cabins, cargo capacity and network density. Its Qsuite business-class concept, introduced in 2017, became a central part of the brand's premium differentiation. In 2017 Qatar and several neighboring states entered a diplomatic and transport blockade, disrupting some routes and requiring the airline to reroute or suspend services to affected countries, while also encouraging it to seek alternative markets. The airline's commercial position has periodically been contested by rival carriers, especially over allegations of subsidies and unfair competition. Employee policies, working conditions and public comments by senior management have also generated criticism. In 2023 Akbar Al Baker left the chief executive role and Badr Mohammed Al-Meer became group chief executive. Qatar Airways Group now operates as a diversified aviation group whose activities include passenger transport, cargo and other airline-support businesses. Its identity remains closely tied to Qatar's state, Doha's geographic position and Hamad International Airport's role as an intercontinental transfer hub.
