Overview

Puls 24 (stylised PULS 24) is an Austrian private television news channel owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE. It was first made available on 1 August 2019, when its frequency was switched on, initially showing a placeholder and short trailers. The official broadcast launch took place on 1 September 2019 at 19:00, with Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen symbolically pressing a red button to start the transmission. The channel broadcasts exclusively in HD and, like most Austrian channels, is encrypted by default; during its first year it was available free-to-air. Its slogan is "Life is Live". The channel's programming is built on two pillars: news and politically or socially relevant events in Austria and internationally. Its schedule includes the breakfast format Café Puls, live news blocks with updates at the top and bottom of the hour, two major news shows (one at midday and one at 20:15), and a daily talk show at 21:00 with rotating hosts. The programme "Pro&Contra" with Puls 4 info director Corinna Milborn is also broadcast live on Puls 24 and recorded for Puls 4. The channel covers events ranging from demonstrations to press conferences, digital conferences and festivals, and balls. It operates three large studios and has five reporters across the country to enable live inserts at any time. Puls 24 also carries sports, having secured rights for the National Football League, the ICE Hockey League and the UEFA Youth League at launch. Since the 2021/22 season it has broadcast matches of the German Football League (Deutsche Fußball-Bundesliga), and from the 2022 season all games of the Austrian teams in the European League of Football. The channel is accompanied by an app for iOS and Android offering a live stream, a news section, self-produced videos and a "Trending Personalities" feature that lets users follow public figures and receive current news about them along with the source. Puls 24 is distributed via satellite (encrypted in HD, requiring an ORF card and HD-capable receiver), in most Austrian cable networks in HD, and via antenna through simpliTV on DVB-T2. The channel is part of the ProSiebenSat.1 group in Austria, which had previously experimented with the HbbTV news channel 4NEWS (launched 20 October 2016 and discontinued around 2018) and launched Puls 24 in the Zappn app in late May 2019 as a pop-up channel for breaking news, ahead of the 2019 National Council election. The official website is puls24.at.

History

Puls 24 is an Austrian private television news channel owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE. Its origins lie in the group's earlier Austrian news experiments. On 20 October 2016, ProSiebenSat.1 launched the news channel 4NEWS in Austria, but it was an HbbTV-only service, effectively an app requiring an HbbTV-capable television with an internet connection. Markus Bacher, Director Distribution, said at the time: "After the launch of the app of the same name, we are now launching the announced 4NEWS television channel via the established HbbTV standard. This gives our users a 24-hour news offering. In addition, the content brand '4NEWS' is already integrated linearly into the channels Puls 4 and Kabel eins Doku Austria." With the new HbbTV channel, ProSiebenSat.1 offered advertisers another innovative marketing channel to extend digital campaigns to the TV set. 4NEWS is no longer on TV today; it was most likely discontinued sometime in 2018. Its former slot is now occupied by the 24/7 HbbTV channel 4MEDIATHEK. Puls 24 itself first went live in late May 2019 in the Zappn app. It was planned as a pop-up channel for breaking-news content. From the start, the company stated that "pop-up" did not indicate an imminent end to the new channel. Managing Director Markus Breitenecker announced that the channel would be expanded with a view to the 2019 National Council election. In late August 2019 it became known that the channel would also be distributed via antenna, cable and satellite in HD at no additional cost. The broadcast launch was on 1 September 2019 at 19:00. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen pressed the symbolic red button, officially initiating the start of broadcasting. The channel's programming is built on two pillars. The first is news. The second targets politically and socially relevant events in Austria and internationally. Such an event is the "4Gamechanger Festival", which was to be seen exclusively on Puls 24 in 2020. From demonstrations to press conferences, digital conferences and festivals or balls, these were to be covered by Puls 24. In addition to three large studios to be used, five reporters travel throughout the country to enable a live insert at any time. In terms of programming schedule, in the morning the channel takes over the breakfast format Café Puls. This is followed by a live block until 12:00, interrupted by news updates at every full and half hour. At midday comes the first of two major news shows. At 20:15 the second major news show starts, and at 21:00 a daily talk show with rotating moderation on various topics takes place. The programme "Pro&Contra" with Puls 4 info director Corinna Milborn is also broadcast live on the new channel and simultaneously recorded for the channel Puls 4. In the trailer that ran in a continuous loop before broadcasting began, further information about the schedule was provided. In principle, it is not intended to run programmes on two channels of the group in parallel. Exceptions are the "Café Puls" breakfast television and ten main evening election shows for the 2019 National Council election. On the sports side, at the launch of the new channel the broadcasting group secured new sports rights to be shown on Puls 24. Among others, the channel shows the National Football League, the ICE Hockey League and the UEFA Youth League. Since the 2021/22 season the channel has broadcast matches of the German Football League (Deutsche Fußball-Bundesliga), and from the 2022 season all games of the Austrian teams in the European League of Football. Puls 24 broadcasts exclusively in HD and, like the vast majority of Austrian channels, is encrypted by default; in the first year of its existence it was freely receivable. The channel's slogan is "Life is Live". Reception is possible via satellite (encrypted in HD, requiring an ORF card and an HD-capable receiver; Astra Digital 19.2° East, DVB-S2/8PSK, transponder 31, frequency 11,671 MHz, symbol rate 22,000, FEC 2/3, horizontal polarisation), via cable (in most Austrian cable networks in HD), and via antenna/simpliTV (with simpliTV Box or simpliTV Modul via DVB-T2). The accompanying app for iOS and Android offers a live stream, a news section, self-produced videos and a "Trending Personalities" feature that lets users follow public figures and receive current news about them along with the source.
