Overview
PSI Audio is a Swiss professional audio brand producing fully analog, phase-aligned reference studio monitors and active bass traps. The brand was born at Relec SA in Switzerland, a company specializing in precision electronics, and its products are hand-built, individually calibrated and measured in Swiss workshops. PSI Audio states its monitors are used worldwide by recording studios, broadcasters, mastering engineers and scientific institutions.
History
The story of PSI Audio began in 1975 when Alain Roux started producing his first speakers while studying at EPFL in Lausanne. Two years later he started making a profit selling his speakers and founded a company called Roux Electroacoustique. In 1988 the company became a Limited Company and was renamed Relec SA, and Alain relocated it to a new purpose-built facility in Yverdon-les-Bains. Over the years Alain and his team developed a wide variety of speakers, from Hi-Fi and Public Address systems to professional studio applications, and many were produced as OEM products under the brand names of respected international companies. In 1991 an analogue and digital electronics section was added to the acoustic laboratory and electronics expert Christian Martin was recruited to lead development in these areas. From 1992 until 2003, Relec SA worked in close partnership with Studer, developing and producing the OEM line of monitors for Studer comprising A1, A3 and A5. In 2004 Studer was acquired by an international group and had to stop selling studio monitors under the Studer brand, so Relec SA and Studer discontinued their relationship; this was the start of the PSI Audio brand in studio monitoring. Since then PSI Audio has developed into a respected worldwide brand producing professional studio monitors. In 2016 PSI Audio released the first active bass trap, named AVAA C20, entirely analogue, to fight room modes. PSI Audio states it was born at Relec SA, a company specializing in precision electronics, and that through collaboration with research institutions, engineers and mastering studios it evolved into a global reference for linear, phase-accurate analog monitoring.
