Overview

Pryngeps is an Italian watch brand founded in Milan in 1956 by Leonardo and Michele Farinola. The company produces wristwatches — both time-only models and chronographs — and has built a reputation for accessible Italian design, colourful quartz watches and a distinctive five-point crown logo. Its official website states that with a success story dating back to 1953, Pryngeps has obtained recognition as a 'Marchio Storico di Interesse Nazionale' (Historic Brand of National Interest), representing a beacon of excellence in the watchmaking sector. The brand describes itself as combining the clean, rigorous lines of steel with the refined lightness of applied stones, turning watches into jewellery-like pieces. Pryngeps has released numerous collections over the decades, including Flatline, Noblesse, Magic Moon, Sangue Blu, Horizon, N Flatline, Tide, Master, Italia 90, Jamaica, Corona, Adriatico, Stelvio, Roma, Wall Street, Portofino, Mediterraneo and Erre X. The brand's watches have often drawn stylistic inspiration from more famous watchmakers: the Mediterraneo and Adriatico lines recall the Rolex Submariner, while the Erre X collection references the Rolex Datejust. In 2016 the company was acquired by the Esani family, its current owner. The official website notes a family passion spanning generations, from the Farinola family to the Esani family. Today Pryngeps sells men's, women's and young people's watches in precious and fashionable materials, positioning itself as a point of reference for Italian style. The brand markets itself around the idea that luxury is within reach, with watches designed to personalise one's look and express one's personality. Its collections include the Jamaica 70th Anniversary, Erre X, Wall Street, Crono Stelvio and Mediterraneo. The company remains privately held and is based in Milan.

History

Pryngeps was founded in Milan in 1956 by Leonardo and Michele Farinola. The company produced wristwatches, both time-only models and chronographs, some of which used supplied Landeron movements. Its logo is a five-point crown, similar to Rolex's but lower and wider, rendered with a simplified graphic from the 1980s onwards. In the 1980s, the Flatline collection produced very thin watches with compact dimensions, as well as others with an aesthetic very similar to the Rolex Datejust. During this period, the Noblesse lines (time-only watches with peripheral date indication) and Magic Moon, with large moon phases in keeping with the fashion of the time, also spread. The house also made a curious watch with a telephone token instead of the dial, which soon became a small 'mascot' among enthusiasts. Between the 1980s and 1990s, the Sangue Blu line was born, initially characterised by dress watches and watches with a sober, elegant aesthetic, but later expanded with more sporty chronographs, along with the Horizon collection. Another typical line of the period is the N Flatline, which distinguished watches with reduced thickness and a rather minimal design. Towards the end of the 1980s, the Pryngeps emblem (the crown) was stylised and slightly simplified. In the same period, the sporty Tide was presented, a quartz timepiece certified as a chronometer with the function of indicating moon phases and tides, and the sports chronographs of the Master line also spread, whose design vaguely recalls that of the Breitling Chronomat. In 1990, the Italia 90 collection was released, celebrating the World Cup football championship in Italy, with goalkeeper Walter Zenga involved as a testimonial. In the first half of the 1990s, the Jamaica collection spread, made up of very colourful quartz watches, some with liquid crystal displays. In particular, the Jamaica Sound was equipped with a minute repeater function that allowed the time to be known via an acoustic signal. At the beginning of the 2000s, Pryngeps chronographs returned, including automatic ones, many powered by the reliable Valjoux 7750. As the company's emblem had always been a crown, in 2006, to celebrate the brand's 50 years of activity, the Corona collection was launched. In 2016, the company was acquired by the Esani family, its current owner. Several collections are offered in the catalogue, a good part of which betray a reference to better-known watch brands (the Mediterraneo and Adriatico lines recall the design of the Rolex Submariner, while the Erre X collection is a reference to the Rolex Datejust). The official website states that with a success story dating back to 1953, Pryngeps has obtained recognition as a 'Marchio Storico di Interesse Nazionale', representing a beacon of excellence in the watchmaking sector, uniting past, present and future. The brand describes its philosophy as a fusion between the elegance of the clean, rigorous lines of steel and the refined lightness of precious stones, transforming each watch into a unique piece that goes beyond simple time measurement. It also notes that its watches are the fruit of a passion spanning generations, from the Farinola family to the Esani family.
