Overview

Prudnik Horse Stud (Polish: Stadnina Koni Prudnik, SK Prudnik) is a Polish state-owned horse breeding enterprise based in Prudnik, Opole Voivodeship. It was established as an independent unit on 1 July 1968, after being separated from the Moszna Horse Stud, though horse breeding in the Prudnik area dates back to 1949. The stud is located at the foot of the Opawskie Mountains and is a member of the Polish Horse Breeders Association (Polski Związek Hodowców Koni). The stud breeds sport horses of the Małopolska/Anglo-Arabian and noble half-blood types, intended for show jumping and eventing (WKKW). It maintains 19 unique female families descended from Gidran mares from the Gumniska Stud of Prince Roman Sanguszko in Janów Podlaski and from French Anglo-Arabians. One of its best-known horses is the gelding EL CAMP, which won the Polish Junior Championship twice and was the best Polish-bred show jumper in 2013–2015. In addition to horse breeding, the stud also breeds Polish Red-and-White dairy cattle (a conservation breed) and engages in crop production. After the political transformation in Poland, the stud was liquidated as a state enterprise on 5 November 1992 and taken over by the Agricultural Property Agency of the State Treasury. On 19 January 1994, a limited liability company named Stadnina Koni Prudnik Sp. z o.o. was registered, starting operations on 1 February 1994. In 2003, it was classified as a company of special importance to the national economy. The stud offers horses for sale, pregnant heifers, and riding lessons, and it supports the Olimp Prudnik equestrian club, founded in 1972.

History

Horse breeding in the Prudnik region began in 1949 at Ląka Prudnicka, when over 30 mares imported from Norway were brought from Prószków. The breeding operation was later moved to Chocim. Initially, the stud was subordinate to the Moszna Horse Stud. On 1 July 1968, the Prudnik stud became an independent unit. It operated as a state enterprise (przedsiębiorstwo państwowe). After the fall of communism in Poland, the stud was liquidated by decision of the Minister of Agriculture on 5 November 1992 and taken over by the Agricultural Property Agency of the State Treasury (Agencja Własności Rolnej Skarbu Państwa), Regional Branch in Warsaw, as a state treasury farm. On 19 January 1994, after separating part of the assets from the state treasury farm, a company named Stadnina Koni Prudnik Spółka z ograniczoną odpowiedzialnością was registered at the Economic Court in Opole. It began business activity on 1 February 1994. By regulation of the Minister of Agriculture of 11 April 2003, the company was classified as a company for animal breeding of special importance to the national economy. The stud has operated continuously since 1949. It is situated in a picturesque area at the foot of the Opawskie Mountains. In addition to breeding sport horses of the Małopolska/Anglo-Arabian and noble half-blood types for show jumping and eventing, it also breeds Polish Red-and-White dairy cattle (a conservation breed) and carries out crop production. The stud maintains 19 unique female families descended from Gidran mares from the Gumniska Stud of Prince Roman Sanguszko in Janów Podlaski and from French Anglo-Arabians. One of its best horses is the gelding EL CAMP, which won the Polish Junior Championship twice and was the best Polish-bred show jumper in 2013–2015. On 9 September 2016, Józef Stępkowski, a former member of parliament for Self-Defence of the Republic of Poland, became president of the Prudnik stud. In 1972, the popular equestrian club Olimp Prudnik was founded, based in Prudnik at 2 Jesionkowa Street in Górka. Regional show jumping competitions are organized at the stud.
