Overview

PROYDE (Promoción y Desarrollo) is a Spanish association and non-governmental development organization founded on 12 April 1988 and linked to the educational works of the Hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas (La Salle). It was recognized as a non-profit association by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior on 20 July 1988, joined the Coordinadora de ONGD de España (CONGDE) on 20 July 1989, was declared an Association of Public Utility on 22 May 1998, and was registered as a development NGO with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) on 20 December 1999. On 20 May 2000 its board decided to begin promoting fair trade from its head office and local delegations, and on 31 March 2008 it joined the Coordinadora Estatal de Comercio Justo (CECJ). The organization works in international development cooperation across five continents, especially in the field of the right to education. In emergency situations it usually participates in the reconstruction and rehabilitation phase. It also works in its immediate environment through development education and awareness-raising, fair trade, social and political advocacy, and volunteering. Its mission is to contribute, through work and witness, to building a world in which all people live with dignity, establishing channels for active participation to live an authentic and committed solidarity in building a more just world. Because of its link to the Lasallian family, PROYDE presents itself to all members of that family — and through them to society at large — as a privileged channel for solidarity both locally and in impoverished countries. Fraternity, the right to education and personal conversion are at the base of this link. Five values frame its institutional philosophy: the dignity of all people; the capacity of all people and communities; the values of all people; commitment to the right to education; and commitment to promoting and participating in solidarity networks. Its activities include development programs and projects in impoverished countries, especially in the area of the right to education; actions in emergency situations, mainly in reconstruction and rehabilitation; and transformation of the social, political and economic structures at the origin of inequality, injustice and exclusion, as well as changing the anti-values that sustain those structures. It does this through development education and awareness-raising, political advocacy campaigns, promotion of volunteering, and commitment to fair trade and responsible consumption. PROYDE works in networks nationally and internationally. Nationally it belongs to CONGDE and nine regional coordinators, the Red de Entidades de Desarrollo Solidario (REDES) and the CECJ. It is also a collaborating agent of Ciudad por el Comercio Justo and coordinates, with IDEAS, the Centros Educativos por el Comercio Justo project. It is part of the Coordinadora Lasaliana de ONGD. Internationally it works with the Coordinadora de ONG Lasalianas de Desarrollo de Europa-Mediterráneo and in platforms supporting international projects, notably the Platform of Support for the Fratelli Project (with Lasallian NGOs and Sed) working with Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Lebanon, and the Platform of Support for Solidarity with South Sudan (with Proclade and Sed) for training teachers in Yambio, nurses and midwives in Wau, farmers and displaced people from the civil war in Riimenze, and community leaders in Juba. On transparency and good governance, PROYDE was declared a public utility entity in 1998 and undergoes a voluntary annual accounting audit, in addition to audits by the Fundación Lealtad on "Transparency and Good Practices of NGOs" regarding compliance with principles of action, organization and management, and by CONGDE on "Transparency and Good Governance." Territorially, PROYDE is present in 13 autonomous communities and one autonomous city, organized into 5 territorial delegations and 61 local delegations.
