Overview

Protgen (普罗吉公司), formally Beijing Protgen Biotechnology Development Co., Ltd., is a Chinese R&D-driven biopharmaceutical company founded in August 2004 by returning overseas scholars. Headquartered in Beijing's Haidian District, the company carries out the industrialization and translation of scientific research projects, focusing on recombinant protein drugs, antibody drugs and in-vitro diagnostic reagents. It is a constituent unit of the National Engineering Research Center for Protein Technology at Tsinghua University, the first national engineering laboratory established by the National Development and Reform Commission at Tsinghua. Professor Luo Yongzhang serves as director of the center, while former Chinese Academy of Sciences president Zhou Guangzhao and Nobel laureate James D. Watson, co-discoverer of the DNA double helix, serve as honorary directors. Over nearly two decades, Protgen has built a proprietary platform for recombinant protein drug development and large-scale manufacturing that it describes as reaching international standards. Its product portfolio includes injectable-grade recombinant human serum albumin, the Protgen® disinfectant, and a heat shock protein 90α (Hsp90α) quantitative detection kit. The company states it holds 80 authorized invention patents at home and abroad (24 Chinese and 56 foreign), and has experience successfully developing a National Class 1.1 new recombinant protein drug and a National Class III (high-category) medical device. Protgen has received support from the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Beijing, Yantai, Shenzhen and Changzhou authorities. It has established five subsidiary companies, including Beijing Protgen Biology, Yantai Protgen Biology, Yantai Protgen Pharmaceuticals, Shenzhen Protgen Pharmaceuticals, Yantai Protgen Testing and Changzhou Protgen Pharmaceuticals. Its marketing network covers 18 provinces and municipalities across China, six of which are covered by medical insurance, and the company reports that more than four million patients have benefited from its products. It positions itself as an emerging benchmark in the biopharmaceutical industry, with the mission of making humanity healthier and life more dignified.

History

Protgen was founded in August 2004 by returning overseas scholars as an R&D-driven high-tech enterprise tasked with the industrialization and translation of scientific research projects. From its base in Beijing, the company focused on recombinant protein drugs, antibody drugs and in-vitro diagnostic reagents, and became a constituent unit of the National Engineering Research Center for Protein Technology at Tsinghua University — the first national engineering laboratory established by the National Development and Reform Commission at Tsinghua. Professor Luo Yongzhang serves as director of the center, with former Chinese Academy of Sciences president Zhou Guangzhao and Nobel laureate James D. Watson as honorary directors. During the periods of China's 10th through 13th Five-Year Plans, Protgen undertook multiple national-level research projects, including National 863 Major Projects, Major Projects of the Natural Science Foundation, and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. The company reports holding 80 authorized invention patents at home and abroad (24 Chinese and 56 foreign) and having experience successfully developing a National Class 1.1 new recombinant protein drug and a National Class III (high-category) medical device. According to the company's development timeline, in May 2016 the tumor marker Hsp90α was listed among the ten major basic science breakthroughs since the founding of the People's Republic of China. In July 2016, Shenzhen Protgen Pharmaceutical Technology Co., Ltd. was established. In June 2018, Yantai Protgen Medical Testing Company was founded. In December 2020, the recombinant human serum albumin project was approved to enter clinical trials. In December 2021, Protgen and Tsinghua University established the National Engineering Research Center for Protein Technology. In November 2023, Changzhou Protgen Pharmaceutical Technology Co., Ltd. was established. In March 2024, the Yantai Biological International Precision Medicine Innovation Port was completed, and in August 2024 the company marked its 20th anniversary. With support from the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Beijing, Yantai, Shenzhen and Changzhou authorities, Protgen has set up five subsidiary companies across Yantai, Shenzhen and Changzhou. Its marketing network now covers 18 provinces and municipalities in China, six of which are covered by medical insurance, and the company reports that more than four million patients have benefited from its products. In 2024, Shenzhen Protgen's Phase III clinical trial results for recombinant human serum albumin were published in STTT, and the new drug marketing application for Protgen's recombinant human serum albumin injection was formally accepted by the National Medical Products Administration.
