History
Protasco's origins date back to 1952 with the establishment of Jabatan Kerja Raya's (JKR) first material laboratory in Pulau Pinang. In 1967, the laboratory became part of JKR's Research and Development Unit. JKR's Training Centre commenced operations in 1981 and was later consolidated with four regional laboratories in 1987, leading to the formation of Institut Latihan & Penyelidikan (ILP) JKR Malaysia on 1 January 1988. ILP was subsequently rebranded as Institut Kerja Raya Malaysia (IKRAM). Between 1997 and 2003, IKRAM was privatised, federal road maintenance went nationwide, and Protasco Berhad listed on Bursa Malaysia. Between 2012 and 2020, the group opened a full university, brought an energy division online under a long-term power purchase agreement, and entered hospitality with its first hotel. From 2024 onwards, Agriventure joined the portfolio and the education arm was divested in a strategic realignment.
